I have absolutely no idea when it comes to cars or petrol but I know everytime I have filled up at my local Lukoil station my car seems sluggish. It's bad enough trying to join fast flowing, bumper to bumper traffic on NJ highways at the best of times but when your car suddenly decides to splutter a bit it's scary as hell.

(99 if I remember rightly).

Shell claimed to have extra additives in theirs inspired by Ferrari technology it may have been BS but the difference was noticeable to me on acceleration and ‘pick up’. I’m a car nut so I tested the both fuels a few times.

However most cars aren’t as highly tuned, although going with less then what the manufacture recommends isn’t a good idea.
Vortech Supercharged M54 BMW 6 cylinder 3 litre with aftercooler (squeezing in 9 Ibs of boost) with a high flow injectors, Stainless equal length headers into a crossover then high flow cats to a stainless steel Borla system with underdrive pulleys and I only use Mobil premium gas as theres no other big name gas stations locally.

Absolutely right, I often would see tankers from all different oil companies coming out of the big Esso terminal at heathrow. However, there have been too numerous to count occurances of the little stations getting their delivery drivers to put the cheaper gas in the forecourt tanks for the more expensive gas. Therefore unsuspecting buyers getting a much lower octane gas than they wanted and were actually paying for.

Really?! I haven't heard any of this before.. does this apply to the US too? I am always inclined to support smaller businesses whenever possible..

I would image its industry practice in every country but cant say for definate. Hoewever, I do think you are more likely to be ripped off at the smaller gas stations by paying for high octane when your really getting the decaf.

My understanding was always that if your car didn't call for premium fuel - then you were just throwing your money away. If, however, it does call for premium fuel (my husband's does for instance) then that's what you should use. (i.e. follow the manual)

"industry practise in every country"..nah....thats a bit of a far reach. Sure there are always gonna be a few folks out there think they can boost their margins a bit, and there are lots of ways they can try to do it (even adding water to a 'dry' grade for instance!!) but it aint a long term business plan - there are a too many people/paperwork involved down the supply chain, from a relatively small number of primary suppliers. And theres always the weights and measures folks who may not be the brightest bulbs in the candelabra, but sooner or later they'll catch on.

The "Industry practice in every country" remark was about tankers of all different oil companies going into a fuel terminal of one particular company to load up with fuel and deliver to their own chain of gas stations not about the practice of small gas stations selling 87 octane as 93..
