no shell or bp around where I am, plenty of mobile, gulf, sunoco etc though...not used cheapo stuff from BJ's or Sam's etc as none of those stores around with petrol, but there wasn't any difference in the premium for the bj's up in haverhill, but the regular was a lot cheaper.

Good post but I will add that only premium should be used in high altitude areas.

I use premium and nothing else. If I could get 110 octane race gas for $7 a gallon around here I would use that instead.

I used the cheap stuff in my truck until I had a bit of a knock and no time to take it in for a tune up, so I switch to premium which got rid of that.

My car take premium based on the owners manual's recommendation.

I got 17.5mpg on that last tank of gas. As an experiment, I've filled her up with SUPER and we'll see what difference it makes to performance/mileage.

Last night, when I'd just filled her up, she felt a lot more Vroomy (that IS the official term) but that might have just been enthusiasm at getting filled up.

I agree!

In general it depends on what type of engine you have; consulting your owner’s manual is a good idea. Interestingly in the UK I had a Honda S2000 a very highly tuned 2 litre engine, I could tell the difference between BP and Shell premium fuels even though they were the same RON rating! (99 if I remember rightly).

Shell claimed to have extra additives in theirs inspired by Ferrari technology it may have been BS but the difference was noticeable to me on acceleration and ‘pick up’. I’m a car nut so I tested the both fuels a few times.

However most cars aren’t as highly tuned, although going with less then what the manufacture recommends isn’t a good idea.

We use bp or shell regular - I went to fill up at our local bp station this morning and it's changed to Gulf overnight. My car definitely doesn't run as well with Lukoil regular.

This business of running better on one brand than another makes me laugh. You have no idea of the source, when one refinery is short and another flush, the short truck will fill up at the flush refinery. It might arrive in a BP truck, but it might have come from the Lukoil refinery. Do you think that Sam's refines it's own gas it buys on the spot market, it could be from a brand name refinery. There are a limited number of refiners, but more brands.
