We're Back!!!!

Hi everyone

Just wanted to let you all know we made it back safe and sound from Canada. Landed in Heathrow an hour late. Collected the dogs 2 hours later. So happy to see them. They travelled really well. No problems whatsoever.
Thank you so much Karen from Boomerang. Couldn't have done it without you.

This tugged at my heart, which says a lot, doesn't it? Can't do it yet, but next year....

But I wish there was a home place to return to as so many of you have. It's been 30 years. Parents dead. Family and friends scattered around, and mostly not in places that appeal.

So it'll be starting from scratch somewhere, working from home. Hope to find a friendly spot!

Lancashire and Staffordshire. Been back every few years to places all over, large and small.

Looking to settle on the coast in the west country because there are some family there and it's a place I've always liked a lot. And beauty. And climate.:D

Their you go then ;) Carn't comment on the area but if its one you like......And usually the villages are lovely where ever you go :D I assume you will rent first? At least that would give you some breathing space to check the area out and get a feel for it...........;)

Definitely. There'll be a trial visit anyway. We've always zipped around visiting, but this will be an attempt to live in an ordinary way for a month or so, and also to see what places we like.

Places are funny. One can have all the right stuff and not appeal at all. Another can be ordinary and seem just right.

PLEASE sign e-petition to remove the 3 year rule. British Citizens O/S must pay 'overseas' fees (£12,000 p.a) to attend a British University. Unfair! More info at petition site, pass it on! http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Unfair-Uni-Fees/

My heart sinks when I read stuff like this. I don't think the UK is a great country. eh? I really do think it's very unfair. the corrupt government is worse than rubbish :curse: this is bad bad and really bad! poor brits. We are leaving the country because of stupid immigrants and what is worse we even have to pay overseas fee? oh man.

ezzie Jun 21st 2008 11:34 am

Re: We're Back!!!!

Yes, it's not fair is it...the same as overseas pensions being frozen etc. We need another 70 signatures to get it noted at no.10 so please sign and pass it on to others. I'm not saying returnees should pay the same 'home rates' straight off, but surely we shouldn't have to pay the same as someone from China (or wherever) who's not British????
Please everyone....log on, and sign the petition, you don't have to live in the UK to sign, just register as an expat (at least they still let us do that!)

Sure. I shall pass it on to others. I am just thinking my British friends who can sign up. hmm.... I am not sure is someone who's been away from the UK about 30 years still eligible then?

There is a 'sticky thread' at the top of this forum's index.

Undoubtably.. but what has it got to do with the OP's point about arriving back in the UK..? Just wondering.. I thought I must have been missing something??

Re: We're Back!!!!

Sorry sambapink...we all get sidetracked sometimes, that's what makes these boards so interesting. I'm sure we'll shut-up now. There is a seperate thread for this in 'moving back'.

please don't claim on me. I am a bit grumpy this morning with mixed feelings about the UK and I am leaving tomorrow. and to Jersygirl, you can remove my posts if you want to - if you think I am wrong. I don't care.

ezzie Jun 21st 2008 12:13 pm

Re: We're Back!!!!

Having mixed feelings about anything just means we're receptive to situations and can see both sides....the alternative is being one of those shiny happy people being fleeced down at Hillsong. You're not wrong at all, life isn't compartmentalised into boxes, nor should these boards be. Don't take it personally -sambapink might be having her own crappy morning too...it's not easy being an expat is it? Sending a bit of karma to help you through the next couple of days.

Hi Bev,

I'm in the same kind of shoes as you. I've been here 30 years and am planning to go back -- just me and the dogs. I have family in the UK, but I have no intention of living with or even necessarily near any of them.

I kinda like it. I can go anywhere I want!!!!! How cool is that? But it's almost a curse because I don't know where I like best. I like it ALL!!!

Seriously, I will probably start off somewhere close enough to commute to London, and I'm thinking northeast side (Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire). But who knows. But after 6 months or a year . . . . . :p As long as I can get work -- and I may be able to go freelance, so my options would be WIDE open.

I feel really positive about returning. (Now where's the emoticon with pink glasses . . . ?)

Re: We're Back!!!!

Wow! How envious am I of you?
No kids? No hubby? Nothing but yourself to consider? A job that is totally transferable? Obviously you have a strong free spirit....I can see you now, leaning out over the prow of the ship, arms outstretched, OK...don't do the Titantic, but you get my drift! Well done - you've just taught us vascilatators a thing or two. When are you going?

Now THERE's an image we shouldn't think about too long . . . .:p

Seriously, though, I do know how lucky I am that I don't have to consider anyone else in my decisions. It breaks my heart when I read posts from people who have to stay where they are because of spouses, kids, or parents. I know there are obligations, but "selfish" goes both ways, doesn't it . . . ?

I don't know when I'm going. I want to sell a mobile home first. There's a possibility we'll close on it next week, but there have been false alarms before. . .
