Default US/UK dual citizen giving birth in the UK

After living in the US for 8 years my husband and I recently moved back to the UK. We are both dual US/UK citizens.

We are expecting our first kid in 2023. They will be born in the UK. We can't find any clear information about what the baby's citizenship will be at birth (I assume British, but will they also be American?) and what (if any) American paperwork needs to be done after birth. I'm not even sure who to ask these questions to!

Could someone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen...-u-s-passport/

Child will be a US citizen from birth. See the link above - Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and first US Passport.

We did this with both our kids, in both cases the US Consul was a young woman who of course ooh’ed and aah’ed over our gorgeous progeny! So very worthwhile, but not absolutely essential since your child will be a US Citizen anyway ..

Thanks robin1234! It doesn't look like there's a requirement to do the consular visit by a certain date after birth, unless we want to travel to the US (in which case the baby will need their own American passport to enter the US). As far as you know am I understanding that correctly?

I think that’s right. We did it pretty early because we were planning to travel to the US to visit family.
