US Kitchen Aid mixer in the UK
Our move is set for July 2019 and my wife is having a hard time parting with her Kitchen Aid stand mixer, it was a dream gift from me when we were young and ut has some sentimental value to it!
We know all about elecronics and are selling everything electrical unless it is dual voltage. There is a ray of hope online, people have used it with a 1000w transformer and had no issues. Others say after a few uses it broke. Has anyone on BE taken a Kitchen Aid mixer from the US to the UK with success? |

Generally anything with a motor doesn’t do well with a transformer tbh. My British friend moved from New Jersey to live just across the lake from us in Zug, central Switzerland and brought her Nespresso coffee maker with her (and a transformer). It didn’t last more than a few weeks and made a strange noise when she was using it....so she soon scrapped it and purchased a replacement one locally. (Incidentally she imported her Toyota from New Jersey too....it was quite amusing going out in it with NJ plates on it for a couple of weeks lol!). |

I have found just the opposite - if a motor, get a high-capacity transformer - at least 10% more than the max wattage of the appliance, and you are good to go. My hubby uses all his US tools here and has for years. I still use a few smaller US appliances. Those big yellow transformers used on building sites are ugly and heavy, but they do the job. Lots of UK tools actually run on 110, hence the transformers are widely available, and relatively cheap.
By contrast, if it's something that heats up - coffee maker, iron, slow cooker, deep fat fryer, whatever, then you will likely have a problem. |
