UK Tax and Customs for Overseas Shipment

Hey, Everyone!

Does anyone have any information or experience on shipping furniture to the UK from the US? We have had quotes from multiple moving companies and they are in our price range. I’m just a little confused about UK customs receiving the shipment? It’s mainly furniture and a few medium sized boxes (no appliances). Will we have to pay Tax and Customs Duty on these items? Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you.

You need to complete a Transfer of Residence. This then enables your shippers to import your personal goods without tax.

Have a read of this :) https://www.gov.uk/guidance/transfer...-great-britain
Its pretty straightforward & lots of us have done it, so just come back with your questions!

Thank you.

As Pollyana says providing your items are eligible for duty free entry all you'll need to do is complete the Transfer of Residence forms and get your authorisation (URN) ahead of arrival.

You can find out if you're eligible for duty and tax-free import by reviewing the UK FIDI customs guide here, including customs rules for certain types of items or situations. Typically you're eligible if you are moving your main residence to the UK, have been outside of the UK for at least 12 months and the items have been owned by you for more than 6 months.
