I probably should have included this in my other post. Oooops.

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me if you have to fill out a questionnaire at the medical and does this include questions about any hospitalisations or mental health issues? I'm thinking that they wouldn't fail you on those grounds but I'm just kind of nervous and wondering how much they want to know. Or do they just concentrate solely on physical stuff like immunisations, blood test and chest X-ray.

I know there's a page of interview emperiences somewhere. I read through most of them once but none of them really answered my questions.

You will be asked about medical and mental problems experienced in the past. Several UK posters in the pat had feared the possibility of a rejection because they were being treated for, or had been treated for such conditions as chronic or severe depression and were on daily meds to control their symptoms. It did not prohibit anyone from obtaining the K-1. Nor will a history of cancer, diabetes, etc.

*Suspected Mental Conditions

Estimated time for Clearance 5 - 30 Days

The applicant must provide to a civil surgeon a psychological or
psychiatric evaluation from a specialist or medical facility for final classification
and clearance.

*Mental retardation; insanity; previous attack of insanity; psychopathic personality,
sexual deviation or mental defect; narcotic drug addition; and chronic alcoholism.

Me again: So it sounds like you need to get clearance from a doctor saying you are
"okay" now.

I read and re-read and re-read again the original post and there is nothing in that post saying she had a conditon that warranted a doctor's signoff.

She only inquired as to questions asked either on the form or by the doctor and that she was nervous about the procedure.

You do have to fill out a medical history questionnaire. It does ask if you take medicines and if you have ever been in hospital. You just tick yes or no to about 20 things, and the doctor will discuss it with you.

If you've had a problem in the past and are now cured, or if you have a condition that is completely under control, don't let it worry you. The biggies to worry about are HIV and TB - that's what they test you for at the medical.

Whatever you medical history, there's not much you can do to prepare for the medical, so try not to worry. It's a good idea, though, to take with you information about any treatment you have received. Don't share it with the doctor unless he asks about it.

Jonathan - is the I-693 Medical Form what I have to fill out on the day of the medical? Or the form that comes with the interview date letter? I'm probably asking really stupid questions because the packet went to my home address and so I'm waiting for my mum to fwd it to me here at uni. So I'll probably be able to figure it out myself by the end of the week.

Hmm, I guess it would be best to go prepared, so I'll see about getting some kind of Drs note I guess.

I wonder if seeing a university counsellor counts as being currently under care or treatment for any mental condition? I guess I'll ask the counsellor. I would be seeing an NHS therapist if the waiting list wasn't so long.

Ok, I just checked this forum on Google rather than britishexpats.com and I found a couple more replies. :) Thanks Jonathan for the link you gave me. Definitely good to read that depression isn't a problem to worry about.

Mental Health Question
 

Hi,
I too have had some slight mental heaalth problems in the past. About 5 years ago I spent 3 night in the local hospitals phychiatric ward due to severe stress. I was not placed on any treatment and the condition has never returned. I too am worried about this going against me. What if you just said you had no history of mental health problems? DO they contact your doctor at all? Let me know how you get on please. Hope you get your visa.

Sure I'll let you know how things go. :) I'll be writing up my medical & interview experience for my website: http://www.geocities.com/ben_jennie and so I can send them to the website collection of them. Probably won't be until near the end of next month though as I'm in my last year of uni and finals are coming up.

The questionnaire that you fill in asks if you've ever sought treatment for any nervous, emotional or mental problems including depression and so I'm going to tick yes for that. There's also a question asking if you've ever been admitted to hospital. I spent one night in a psychiatric ward too and so I guess I'll tick yes and then explain that I'm doing ok now. Seeing as your problems were 5 years ago and haven't reoccured you should be fine. Not telling the truth would be one way to go, but I don't want to be seen to be covering things up, as if it was ever found out then that would look bad. I don't think they contact your Dr at all but I'd advise you to tell the truth anyhow.

Oooh hello again :)

Hmm, well, that depends on which service centre you'll be filing through and what their timelines are like next year. Seeing as the visa is valid for 6 months it's probably better to file sooner than later. We ordered our forms way back in September to be prepared and then I ordered my police certificate and birth certificate pretty early on too. (Our time line is on our site) We sent the petition out on January 5th (to Nebraska) and now my interview is on May 16th so I'll be leaving by the end of this June. :)

Good luck with your last year of uni. That must be hard having to wait a year yet. :(
