Hi Elaine
I've done the test online three times and failed. I've bought the book and heck it sure is a thick book but if it helps me pass then I can't complain.

Just keep going it and you'll soon be getting 50/50.

Also there's a set of DVD's that I found really helpful called driving Test Success.

I know you've been driving for years but it might be a good idea to take a few lesson's with an instructor so you know what to expect on the test.

Yeah I was thinking about maybe taking one or two lessons just to polish up on all my bad habits.

Thank heavens. It'd be such a drag to have to do a test again.

I can remember doing it in Canada. I did it in our car, which we'd only just bought and the windows starting steaming up and I couldn't find the right control. In the end I opened my window. I had a trainee inspector with a supervisor in the back, which was part of the steaming up problem.

The half way through the trainee inspector, clearly with gritted teeth, said, "Why do you keep putting on the hand break every time you stop??????" The guy in the back said, "Don't worry. All the English drivers do that." I pointed out that you'd fail a test in the UK if you didn't.

In those days you had to reverse into a parking slot as well. Not parallel park, but into a regular spot. I wasn't looking forward to that because it's not something I'd normally do. Luckily when we got back to the training place all the slots were full. Whew! They scrapped that a few years later because they found out that it's actually safer to drive into a slot and back out.

You have to do that as part of the UK test now too it's called reverse bay parking, I hope I get the hang of it before the test. I think the test has got a bit more difficult in recent years the pass rate is only about 40%.

With over 20 years experience I'm sure you'll be fine:thumbsup:

How do you find the drivers here are they better or worse than South Africa?

Re: UK Driving Licence Question

Definitely better. With the amount of un-roadworthy cars, unlicensed drivers and the a pile of minibus taxis on the roads in South Africa, driving around Northern Ireland is a dream!

Does anyone know the procedure for my New Zealand OH to get a UK driving livence when we get there?
I remember when I came here, I had to take some daft theory test to get an Aussie licence. I dont think that applies in UK does it?

Good news Flea...it looks like the UK and NZ have a reciprocal agreement regarding driving licenses. So it's just a straight swap...no written or practical test required.

I've just applied for my provisional licence and have made a booking to do my theory test on the 17th Feb. Hopefully I'll pass it first time and then it's off to do my driving test. I've been driving for 22 years so having to redo the whole thing again is quite daunting!!! One of the joys of being out of the country for so long.

Looks like the UK and SA also have a reciprocal agreement...so you won't need to take a test...theory or practical. You just exchange your SA license for a UK one...the SA license is then returned to the SA gov. If you move back to SA they same should apply.

This may not apply to Northern Ireland though.

I thought it was part of the UK  but I get your point. :D

Maybe that applies to countries who don't have an agreement with the UK.

I know it's weird NI has it own little way of doing things. For example the driving test here you have to do 3 manoeuvres on the test whereas it's only 2 for the rest of the UK and after you pass you have to display R plates for a year and you can't go over 45mph.

Re: UK Driving Licence Question

You used to be able to swop your licence but I think with the amount of fraud that goes on in SA where you can buy your licences..... they decided not to do it anymore. Unlucky me!
