UK car insurance query
Hey all,
So I am a Brit citizen with permanent residency and living in Canada now. I exchanged my UK driver's licence for a British Columbian one. My question is, I want to come back to the UK and drive my brother's car. He got a quote from his insurance company stating it would be 22 pounds a day with an excess of a whopping 800 pounds. How can I drive in the UK without being fleeced by insurance companies? Would having an International Driving Permit help my cause?

Are you coming back to the UK to live long-term/permanently, or just for a vacation?

Unless he wants to cancel his policy, shop around and take out a fresh one that is more accommodating. In less straight forward scenarios such as this, talking to a broker might be a good idea. Try Adrian Flux.

You've probably worked this out already, but if you are going to pay that much in insurance, it wouldn't be any more expensive to hire a car for your sole use.

Re: UK car insurance query
When my wife visited her Dad a few years ago before we moved back she was put on his policy and it only cost about £30 with no excess increase. It's a shame they are obviously trying to put people off doing it. Might be worth looking for a cheap hire car or a better insurance company.

As a non-EU resident you can take advantage of the buy-back leasing schemes offered by e.g. Renault or Peugeot, see this link for example: https://www.renaultcanada.com/BuyBackWizard.asp
I've just priced a Renault Clio 1V, auto with GPS and all the trimmings at roughly 24 quid a day all inclusive (tax, insurance, the lot) for a 3-month lease starting today with a Heathrow pick up and drop off.
I've used this system many a time in France hassle free.
