UK Accountant that has USA tax treaty and can complete IRS returns
 

One of the many quandaries of returning to the UK - My original post is in the USA forum but got advised quite rightly that I may get a better response from Brits in this forum who have returned and have sourced a dependable, reasonably priced accountant that can complete HMRC and IRS tax returns and is aware of the UK/USA tax treaty.

I have started to research Ingleton Partners and had a recommend for EQ Tax Experts in Scotland.

Apologies to the excellent moderators if this well worn question has been answered already.

I left Ingleton a fairly detailed yet exploratory few questions on their website and got this:Please also note that we offer fixed fee engagements where affairs are straightforward. For such engagements, please see our cost below:

US Tax Return - £1,600 + VAT

FBAR - £300 + VAT

UK Tax Return - £1,300 + VAT

Our hourly rates are set out below:

Director/Consultant £536 - £750

Assistant Manager/Manager £300 - £450

Associate £200 - £268

I emailed back to say this is probably out of my league as I am in a more 'regular' position - just an average job in the USA, a bit of savings/401k not much - no multiple properties, investments here there and everywhere etc.

Haven't contacted the EQ Tax Experts in Scotland just yet. But they looked from their website to have a good bit of knowledge and experience.

Dear me that seems expensive! Good motivation to try and figure out how to do this ones self I think!

There's 2 companies that always gets a mention here in central Florida. I haven't used either but would certainly consider if need be. First.. Jan Doughty CPA 321 784 8329 and Harding Bell accountants office in Kissimmee.

I pay $100 to get my US tax filed. I didn't expect to 3000 quid per annum in the UK. That would be out of the question. Surely the quoted price above is not the norm??

Does anyone have more information on this? The figure quoted above has come as quite a shock for me--that would be a substantial part of my pension and there is no way I could afford to pay something like that. Is there anyone here who has experience with filing tax and how much tax accountants charge?

Just had an exploratory phone conversation with Harding Bell based in Florida, and glad to say their ball park figure is a fraction of that of the UK company cited above.

I haven’t used them but have been researching this company and they seem reasonable.

Ingleton are specialised in High Net Worth clients. So, those rates they have quoted are reasonable. Fixed fees generally apply irrespective of the complexity of your tax filing. If your situation is more straightforward, then you should try independent accountants. I would not recommend using accountants in the US. They can handle your US tax returns but very unlikely they can handle both US and UK.
