I would assume your container would ship out of San Diego around 360 miles from you so the 720 mile round trip for the truck will be a significant cost.
You will ten have Customs fees and port handling in the USA and UK
Ocean freight.
You will have 2 / 3 hours to load the container or can be charged demurrage but in my experience this is rare

Thanks ottotheboar - sometimes I think it may just be easier to get rid of everything except photo albums and start again in Scotland. My DH disagrees!!

Re: Twenty Foot Container from West Coast USA to UK
very excitingly I am working for a stevedoring company at the moment.
Containers are charged by size- so how much space they take on the vessel rather than by weight. Although of course a overly heavy container would not be safe to life onto a truck - think about 40 tonnes. Usuallly a household is about 25-30 tonnes max.
Shippers have tp pack to ensure you don't back things you are not allowed to take (firearms, food aerosols etc) and the cost is usually door to door but with customs charges on top as they cannot predict what customs will charge.

Re: Twenty Foot Container from West Coast USA to UK
It is not too complicated a few on this forum have opted for the self pack and ship option.
A few points are (apologies if they are stating the obvious).
Everything should be packed and ready to load the day before the container arrives.
The loading height will be around four feet so that is quite a bit of lifting, extra help may be worth considering.
You are in Arizona and containers get very hot very quickly so schedule loading for as early as possible in the morning.
Write down the container number and the shipping company will give you a bill of lading with the vessel and voyage number. You will be able to track it on one of the marine tracking websites.

The company is use is in Norfolk VA, I will ask if they have an office on the west coast.
Any shipping company should be able to give a quote as always get three bids.
