A lot of the basic stuff Addresses for the last 3 years, income, pension, investments, if any. For the UK side the only difference was the reason we were returning, which was acceptable. UK citizens returning home.

Any such comparisons should compare fees and the exchange rate. ie the actual £s you receive, as Durhamlad indicates in #12.
Just transferred $20,000. I set it up in both HSBC Global transfer between my US and UK accounts and also with Wise. Wise gives £303 more than HSBC so I canceled the HSBC window and clicked “submit” in the Wise window. This is £14,468 with Wise against £14,165 with HSBC.

like you, we haven’t lived in the UK for 26 years. We were lucky to have a local HSBC branch and a Manager assigned to our case. We don’t have an address in the UK yet but on arrival will go to the Edinburgh branch with proof of who we are to finish the details. We have secured short term accommodation and can use that address or just use our family. At this point HSBC isn’t as fussy as a local British bank as they are truly international, To quote our local guy, if you have a Premier account in one country you qualify overseas as well. Hope this helps.

this is really helpful but we have decided for our house purchase we are just going to suck up the transfer cost as we will be dealing with a large sum of money and feel safer doing it all in-house. Hubby is risk adverse.

If the transfer is greater than $100k then call HSBC and ask for the “dealing desk rate”. We also transferred our house money using HSBC rather than Wise.

That is good to know. We do have a house in the UK and HSBC US said that we will be assigned a 'case manager' - so looks like we are on our way :-) it's quite a big move you and I are making after 26 years.

when you say 'inhouse' do you mean HSBC to HSBC - we are looking to transfer a chunk of change also.

i am glad you are getting things sorted out with HSBC at your end. We arrived back In Scotland 5 days ago and have connected with the branch in Edinburgh. Everything went smoothly with the exception of sending out our PIN numbers to the wrong address… They have resent this to a family members address and we should receive them next week. Each time we have phoned them in the UK they have been super helpful so fingers crossed it remains that way.
