Tipping in the UK to change
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7533863.stm a change is afoot to stop employers topping up wages with tips - so they have to paya minimum decent wage.
About time too. Now there is no excuse for crap service anymore as if its bad people simply wont tip as they wont feel so guilty about low wages.

I always thought that was very unfair - I think it's good news too.

never did feel the need to tip in the UK, unlike here. For start it will state clearly on the receipt whether a service charge was include or not and you really only tip if the service is good. Plus wages are at least national minimum ulike here.
Having had a son and a daughter who have in their students days been waiters I know the sort of crap they get from guests and how much they got paid hourly. Here in TX you are lucky if you get $2.50 an hour and that is in a big chain restaurant not some greasy Mexican dive

It's about time. I've heard that there are restaurants that pay a minimum wage of exactly £0 an hour. ALL of their wages come from tips. If they didn't get enough tips to meet the minimum, then the boss would top it up. If they made over the minimum, the boss would keep the rest.
Unbelievable!

Probably varies by State, but here in CO if you do not make minimum including declared tips, then your Employer is required to make up the difference.
I thought in the UK there was only one minimum?
