Thinking of Returning to U.K. from Canada
I'm thinking of returning home to the U.K. for a few years, it's not that I dislike Canada, I just think I've been away from the family for a bit too long and I think they'd appreciate it if I went back and spent some time with them.
My Canadian husband is willing to move back, although I do worry about how he'll cope with the change. I remember moving to Canada and it was quite an adjustment, especially dealing with the initial culture shock/home sickness/I have no friends or support network here feelings. Does anyone else have any experiences of moving back to the U.K. with a spouse from another country? How did they cope? I feel quite weird about going back, I've been away for the best part of this decade and I wonder about how much things have changed? I've been back on holidays, but I don't think that's the same as living there. Int. |

Sounds like we have a few simularities. I wonder the same feelings for my husband,(homesick etc) but he is willing to move & I figure we will be doing the same things...raising the children, etc etc Just the jobs will be different. Just the timing now for us. Feel like we seen and done all we can do here, but missing England and the extended family, cousins etc.for my children...something I missed growing up in Canada. There's more to life than just the bigger house, 2 cars iykwim!! Hope you get there:) |

She hated it at first, absolutely loathed the place, full of miserable people and the streets were filthy was what she would tell her Canadian friends on the phone. This went on for about 2 years until she started making friends and by November 2006 it was me who was dragging her back to Canada! Now it's the other way around, she moans about Canadian TV and lack of decent clothes shops and has been back to the UK already to catch up with her old friends. Women 'eh? |

I have no control on the intelligence or common sense of people posting here, but have always maintained that a wise man learns from the mistakes of others, a fool from his own, some people are just destined to make their own mistakes, that is beyond my control.
I have studied how people got wealthy and lived meaningful lives, those I have emulated, nothing that i observe in an over populated Island being buried by crushing Socialism, political correctness, waves of individuals determined not to adopt the country's life style gives me great hope for the U.K. Too many people here fail to accept that the U.K is a third rate power whose reputation is based upon its' past rather than its' future. Rule Britania, Rule What?? Hell, you can't even make it to the Euro Cup, what a pack of losers. $CDN now $1.97. NOT $2.50, and getting stronger, can 1 for 1 be far away??? |

I agree with you that political correctness has gone too far and I hope that there is a shift in the UK in the not too distant future, however you can't tell me there is no political correctness in Canada either ! As for "1 CDN = 1 GBP" - I can't see that happening, especially as Canada unfortunately has a strong history of Boom and Bust. As for Football (Soccer) ... c'mon, you know our recent failings are a sign of our modesty, as we just want to give someone else a chance of the limelight for a change.....by the way will you be putting a bet on Canada qualifying for the 2010 Football (Soccer) World Cup ? |

At least it doesn't depend on just one country for 80% of it's trade or depend on high commodity prices to make money. Remember if the price of Oil slipped below the level it was a few years back, goodbye Alberta Boom. The UK has a higher income per capita than Canada, and doesn't just come from natural resources,it actually has to sell things abroad. Something it actually does quite well. If being a 3rd rate power depended on sporting achievement, then Canada would be a 10th rate power, unless you are a curling fan |
Re: Thinking of Returning to U.K. from Canada
UK a third rate power? what a load of bollocks!
London is the financial capital of the World... has lots of power and influence and a sh*t load more than 'Bay Street'...'Bay what?' I hear you asking.... |

It really must be that, secretly, you too wish you were somewhere else on occasion. Because if that's not the reason, then you clearly are posting what you do because you are a nasty piece of work, who just likes to wind people up. |

Re: Thinking of Returning to U.K. from Canada
Hi Dewdrop,
Thanks for your reply, I hope you and your family manage to get over as well! The way I see it is that you can replace cars and houses, but you can never replace the relationship you have with your family and that's why I think it's important to go back. Int.

Re: Thinking of Returning to U.K. from Canada
i am. though i feel that the move really has more to do with my own self doubt than anything in either country. i am only 8mths in, but it has been very, very hard for a variety of reasons i shall not bore you with, and besides i am sure they are pretty much what everyone experiences.
it would be easier to move back now, and i know i am just remembering the good points, just as i only saw the positives in canada. i guess home sickness for all the things so often mentioned and no need to be repeated plays a huge factor. the question for me is, a brighter future for my family and i, 20yrs hence in canada, or immediate happiness now by returning to familiarity, friends and family in the UK. one thing is for certain, i have yet to find a canadian biscuit that can stand a good dunking, just lost half a cookie, need the commando hob nob of the biscuit world ala mr. kay. lastly give howard a break. howard don't bite. |
Re: Thinking of Returning to U.K. from Canada
Well, it's not exactly the same situation - I lived for 6 years in England, first single and then with my fiance (now husband). We've now relocated to Canada for my sake, so our situation is the reverse of yours! That being said, I enjoyed living in England - I think there's a good chance your OH will love the amount of holidays you get, the ability to travel cheaply to so many amazing places and the sense of history you get everywhere! I found England really pretty, too - not drop your jaw gorgeous like the Rockies but quietly lovely. The downsides for a Canadian I think are the crowding and congestion - you really cannot get your head around hour-long tailbacks due simply to the long weekend traffic until you've actually seen it! (And really, the appalling customer service is so grating when you first encounter it). My main other beef was really just missing the endless blue skies and sunshine that you get in Alberta. But there are so many positives, I think as a Canadian you can really enjoy it especially if there's the possibility that it's not a permanent move- I found it was only in the last few years of living in England that all the things above really grated, which was perhaps delayed culture shock.
