Interesting, before we went abroad a few years ago we had a very low income, but because we had big savings we were barred from all the means tested benefits. Of course as you say the op has to have a place of their own with its costs to benefit from council tax relief.

Get proper competent professional advice before doing anything ! Don't taker advice from strangers on a website or from some guy down the boozer ! The Housing Association on my wee island has vacant properties if you could tolerate sharing an island with me !

True, there are different rules etc in all 4 parts of the UK, so it
s best to check just what is needed for the area you want to move to. The Scottish Islands do have a problem getting people to move there which is why rents etc are much lower than the rest of the UK, however their situations can making living there a bit more expensive for food shopping etc, also they can suffer with winter weather.

I suggest the OP uses one of the benefit calculators to work out how much assistance he might receive in the UK. There is one on the Age UK site.
Age UK also has a a factsheet for anyone returning from abroad. in retirement.

I suggest the OP should have a good look at the rest of the Age UK site too. It contains a lot of useful information for anyone planning retirement in the UK.
