I'm not sure that Americans laugh at British accents, but a lot of Brits laugh at the accent of some of their fellow Brits. Your accents pretty much distinguishes your social class.

I know this will draw ire from some posters but there is something about the way Southern women speak. In other parts of the country, Americans consider the Southern accent to be quite sexy in a woman. To my ears, they just sound brainless and gushy.

Not all southerners sound brainless and gushy. On my visits to Texas and Oklahoma I witnessed a broad spectrum of intellect, combined with very pleasing good manners, not curt. My wife's southern accent, for example, is quite sexy, light, very pleasing and easily understood.
