Tax Return Question.
Hi Guys,
So i was in Canada from 2012 until 2014, i returned home in November 2014 and i worked up until july 1st, i didnt earn 10k in the time between april and july, i am going to be back in England for 2 weeks in January, is there anyway i can claim back my tax for those few months or do i have to wait until the end of the tax year? If i do have to wait until the tax year, can i file a tax return from canada? |

You can submit your Tax Return on-line from anywhere

Re: Tax Return Question.
Hi JAYBAKERCA,
I am assuming you are registered for self assessment with HMRC and are filing annual tax returns which if is the case you will have to wait until the end of the current tax year to claim any tax refund due as this is done via your tax return and HMRC will not issue your 2015/16 tax return until the tax year has ended. Also, please be aware that if you are classed as UK non resident you will not be able to use HMRC's online filing system to submit your tax return as this system is designed for UK residents only and does not have the necessary schedule which you are required to submit as a UK non resident. |
Re: Tax Return Question.
That is true. We used to receive a booklet from HMRC to complete our tax returns when we were abroad. Alternatively, you can download the forms.

I'm not self employed either so i dont have to do a self assessment.
I know that i didnt earn 10k while i was working in England so that money should just be given back to me, should it not? |

I am not clear on where you are at the moment, you say you are UK tax resident, but then you suggest you will be in the UK for a couple of weeks in January, so where are you now? Did you go back to Canada? Your tax residency needs to be clarified and then the double taxation agreement between the countries you lived in (assuming there is one) should be looked at. If you were indeed UK resident that year then overseas income needs to be considered, likewise if you were tax resident elsewhere then that country would probably want to know about UK income. |
