Tax implications when returning to UK?

 We have been in Oz for just over 2 years - just about to get our citizenship - and yes you've guessed it - thinking about returning to UK. Going through all the emotions that everyone else on this site seems to go through at about the same time (I might add). So just in case we do decide to go back is there anyone back in the UK that can tell us what the situation is regarding claiming all the tax benefits etc and letting the tax office know etc. Are there any problems associated with this aspect that anyone has encountered?

Did you notify the tax office that you were emigrating and would not be a resident of UK? You may find you are taxed on any earnings you made in the first year of you being away if you didn't and now that you are returning. I would make sure you have all your tax receipts from Australia just in case. I know a few people recently who have been working abroad who have been stung quite badly by the tax office, because they didn't notify them of them living overseas and they were still on their books.

Hey congrats guys - only 2 weeks to go before you are aussie-cised. We'd love to come up for a party/catch up - it's been ages!

I'll give you a ring one night this week.

The people who can tell you about this is HMRC Centre for Non-residents (CNR). The web site is http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr - it's worth looking through. In particular this FAQ, http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/faqs_general.htm, will tell you how to determine your residency status, what to do on leaving or returning to the UK, and other useful stuff.

You can telephone CNR and ask any questions
