Default South Africa to UK via a third country - quarantine?

South Africa is on UK covid risk list. Can I fly to a ‘covid-safe’ country for a few weeks, then enter UK without the mandatory hotel quarantine? I have been vaccinated against covid already.

Yes, you'll still have to quarantine and have tests, but just won't have to do it in a hotel. Exact rules will depend on which country you're flying in to.

HTH.

And also, what are the quarantine requirements for people travelling to the country to choose to travel via.

I assume you're just looking for whichever country has the most relaxed rules.

Looking for an easy to enter country which is affordable to stay in, rather than the expensive hotel quarantine route set out by UK govt.
Perhaps 2 weeks in Greece or somewhere? Then covid-safely into UK home quarantine.

I don't think Greece is going to be an option, doesn't look as though you can travel there from SA unless you have an essential reason for travel - https://travel.gov.gr/#/

By the time you've paid for the extra flights, and extra food quarantining for 4 weeks in total, etc, is it really going to be so much cheaper?

Regarding costs, I guess it partly depends on length of stay in the third country. I guess being ‘locked’ in a hotel room in UK is bearable, but Airbnb near the Med is rather more attractive. Need to do more research. Cyprus? Romania?

That will have to be at least 10 days, otherwise you'll still have to do hotel quarantine in the UK, if you've been in SA in the 10 days previously.

I guess all you can do is look at each country's restrictions and see if they are allowing people who've been in SA in. And then hope it doesn't change if you book your 10/11 days there and an onward flight to the UK!

Good luck.
