Re: So Where Did You Move Back To And Why?
I have read with great interest the posts about those who have moved back to the UK, but have not heard so much about the area they moved to and why they chose it. Would be great to know why you chose your particular patch of "Old Blighty" to move back to. Was it job opportunites? Friends and family? Quality of living? Or maybe something else...Please do share
Cheers,

if we did ever go back to the UK (it would take a major catastrophe to do that - whch touch wood will never happen) then we'd definately go back to where we used to be in West Sussex.
I think its the lovliest place in the UK, has the South Downs right there, Goodwood for horse racing, car racing, beaches down at West Witt and Aldwick etc.., boaty places like Bosham and Dell Quay, nice shopping in the town, its pretty affluent, lots of nices houses and areas.
Couldnt really complain about it as a place to live as it offers so much, we just get a whole lot more lifestyle, family time and living quality, and career and financial gains and prospects outside the UK.

I remember that, and that you had just brought it, so hoped it didn't affect you. Nothing worse than that. Glad that things are going well, I have a few welsh colleagues and of course all the welsh, etc jokes then come out when they are around, all in good fun.
Yes we did. It's going great if they don't shut us down. One month after we bought it they announced the plan to close a bunch of Post Offices across the UK. They delayed the naming of which ones will close until after the elections.....I wonder why? I can now speak some Welsh (thanks to several customers teaching me) but don't even ask me to spell it

Yorkshire.
Plenty of wide open beautiful countryside, relatively quite roads, gorgeous unspoilt rugged coastlines, stunning moors and hills, reasonable (still) house prices, some of the friendliest people on earth and only an hour or two from several excellent cities, such as Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle.

I don't know if a brit is involved and last i heard neither did the portugeese police say one was. It could be anybody. As a victim who was abducted as a child but survived, I found your comments crass and insensitive when there are people going through hell.

I moved back to Scotland, north of Glasgow. I just learned from another thread that the area just came top in a Reader's Digest survey of best places for families: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6564215.stm - which I can believe. No obvious crime, kids hang out and play outside, lots of walks, country parks, a short drive from the wildies, but Glasgow is about a 30 minute drive with everything it has to offer.
Why did I come back here (other than the above)? I lived here in 2000, and every time I thought of the idea of returning to the UK this place came to mind.
I ended up in south Wales initially, which is another area I'd suggest for anyone who is on a housing budget (you can still pick up a decent house in the valleys for less than 150k), and for the reasons Blaze mentioned. Great people, salt of the earth type (just like where I am now, too). A job came up in Glasgow and I luckily got it and lo and behold a house was for sale on the same street I lived in 2000! (A lot more expensive than back then, but that's another story ...)

You found my betting that a Brit was involved offensive? I think you are over reacting and being a drama King.
I said the same thing when two Spanish women in their early 20's got murdered, here in Spain, one burnt and the other dumped in a ditch and I hoped I was wrong. It was a Brit with prior convictions called Tony King. There was alot of hate directed toward the Brits at that time especially Men who were innocent and tared with the same brush. It is not nice walking in an area and feeling that hate because someone of your nationality has done some awful murder to your host country's women. Unfortunately the Algarve and Costas have alot of British ex cons living amongst the communities, including pedophiles. We had one recently here in Spain that was a Brit that made the news. I personally don't like it that a chunk of scum tars it for the rest of us, but unfortunately that is how life is. And no doubt other nationalities have had similar problems when one of their own has done attrocities in the UK.
I'm sorry that you were abducted but by your own words you survived, others are not so fortunate.
I'm hoping it is known Brit pedophile, because then they know what they are up against. If it is a child trafficking gang my blood runs cold because I know what is involved in that and what the child goes through.
The only person who might be in hell is the child depending on who has got her. But she isn't alone, there are millions of children like her in similar and worse situations. Everyone else is in heaven in comparison. The world is a shitty place at the best of times with alot of unnecessary cruelty and there are alot of kids abused by people that they should be able to trust.
If you are really upset about this child's situation, if you're not already doing it, why not get involved with some of the organsations who deal with missing kids. You can turn your experience as a child in helping others in a similar situation and their parents, sometimes it is better to turn a negative part of our life into something positive.
If I caused offence I didn't mean to, but if I was a foreigner saying it, then it might be deemed more offensive but I'm not.

Re: So Where Did You Move Back To And Why?
I think you are unfair on yourself in coming to the conclusion that your idea idea that Australia is a better place for kids is "a load of cobblers".
There is much to be said for the UK, and it might help to understand that much of Australia's bravado comes from an era when moving to Australia was an emphatic better bet that staying in the UK.
At the turn of the 20th century Australia's residents (not the Aboriginals), due to isolation and spacious clean conditions, had what was nearing a modern life expectancy. The main reason people didnt come to Oz in those days was there was no gaurantee that they would survive the ships journey, many many died enroute.
To this day Australians seem to have imbibed their ancestors attitudes that if you have house, a local shop, etc your OK-many migrants didnt have those things in the British Isles and achieved them in Oz.
Yet the UK is twenty years ahead now in what might be termed lifestyle exectations-and Brits want more that just the basics.
Much is to be said for the UK today-its a pretty good place.
However, I still think the one arena that Australia shines in is that is still the far better place for kids. More relaxed, more outdoorsy and most of it is more safe for children in all sorts of ways.

I can't agree with you more! My kids are positively shining here in Australia, however, I think in a few years when they are in there 20's they will be better off in Europe, just my opinion only, which will obviously give us a headache, where to go where to live. Oh Soapy please give me some advice on this one, I feel a ping pong pom coming on at any minute
