Default Shipping - Canada to UK

Hello all,

Can anyone recommend any shipping companies from Canada to UK, in particular, I will be shipping from Toronto to Surrey or wherever nearby they may ship to in the UK on the coast?

We will be shipping a lot of stuff, including furniture.... so if you have any recommendations and even rough cost estimates, I would be very grateful to hear from you!

Thanks very much

I'm also looking to ship from Glasgow to Calgary and looking for reccommendations and advice.

Has anyone any experience of group shipping, i.e. can I team up with someone else to share the cost as the quotes I've had so far are for a full container which I don't think we will use all of.

My wife and I are already in Calgary and looking to ship our belongings at some point early next year. We are pretty flexible on dates anytime in Feb and March would work.

Edited - d'oh realised I posted in the wrong forum, didn't notice that my search pulled up all forums when I was in the Canada one...

I haven't used any yet but if you do a search, AMJ Campbell comes up and I'm sure there is more but that one comes to mind, I would get quotes from more than one...and just remember just because one might be cheaper doesn't me they are the better choice...
Make sure they do the packaging...as I've heard its easier thru customs and your things won't get opened up...see if it door to door service etc..

They also do 20ft containers/40ftcontainers...a 40ft was compared to a 3bed house with garage junk....

Good luck with your move. when are you going?
We are looking to move back soon too, and I'm in the selling mode. will bring abit back but want to start new making few exceptions!!...we live east of Toronto, and hopefully going to East Anglia

We had quotes form AMJ Campbell, The MI Group and Williams. In the end we went with The MI Group. Not the cheapest but their service looked to be better. The quality of the wrap they used was far superior to the others. They specialise in international moves only.

A gang of 3 took two full days to wrap and pack our stuff. (5 bed house with lots of junk) although as we had sold a lot we kept it down to a 20ft container. We paid for an unpacking service in the UK aswell. Total cost if I can remember was about $11,000.

Their agent in the UK was Anglo Pacific. What little contact I had with these was okay. Our stuff was packed on 7/8 Sept and left port on 14th September. It arrived in the UK On 14th October and was delivered to our door on 26th October. No breakages at all. We did pay for 3 day storage at port though for an additional 102 pounds.

No problems with custom clearance or that, only thing was access to our property was a little tight - although I made this clear they did try to drive the truck with our 20ft container plus another one (they were doing 2 deliveries) up the road and couldn't make it - the guys unloading and setting up therefore had to do a shuttle run. Advise therefore make it clear about access to your property.

Good luck with whomever you choose.

We used a company called amfreight international, they had an office in Brampton. Cost $4,500 approx all in. February 2005. But we had to load and unload the container ourselves and I had to go to North Shields to have the container cleared, cost another £30.00. We had six hours to load a 40' container and 2 hours to unload. 3 of us loaded it in about 5.5 hours and no problems at this end with friends and family, plus a sunny day and a big front garden. No problems. We took a risk though and didn't get the insurance. The insurance can be the costly part.

For me personally, I am returning home as I want to be near my family and friends - I originally only left for 1 year and here we are 5 years later... so to me it's been a long time coming. I lived elsewhere before Canada, which is when I met my husband; and we only came to Canada/Toronto because my husband's job transferred him here 2 years ago. It was purely for his career growth and never was intended to be a long term move; obviously you don't know if you will end up settling down in a new place, but I have never felt settled here, I have in fact been pretty miserable here unfortunately.

Things I have disliked apart from having no family around or good friends - which I happen to feel are pretty important! are (in no particular order) the high taxes and high cost of goods and therefore generally feeling poor even on professionals' salaries (although I can appreciate that taxes are certainly not low in the UK - I'd rather feel poor with family and friends around ;-)), the fact that you have to drive a minimum of 6 hours to get anywhere remotely interesting other than Niagara Falls, which after a couple of visits you really don't need to go back; North American work culture, lack of holidays and travel options and if you do travel it costs an arm and a leg, and you feel like you end up using your pokey holiday allowance to go back to visit England.

Unfortunately big houses and big cars to me are not the be all and end all which I know appeals to lots of brit expats with their british pounds when they first leave the UK, however, once you get here you have to consider you'll be paid a cdn salary - it's very different than coming as a wealthy British tourist. I more favour the European style of life and always have, and that has only been more clarified living here the past couple of years. Obviously there are pros and cons to wherever you are, there just happen to be more pros for me personally being in UK/Europe.
