Question Shipping back possessions to a second home

I've been overseas for a while and have recently bought and renovated a house back in the UK. I am planning to ship my possessions back but NOT complete the TOR form, as I am not actually transferring residence -no just yet anyway. According the HMRC, I can be charged customs and VAT for everything I ship. All my possessions are second-hand and over 6 months old and most I would say have no commercial value. Has anyone gone through this process? What detail did you give the shippers and what was the final outcome? How do you put a value on second-hand clothes, books, paintings etc? Any advice would be warmly welcomed.
