I agree with Krizzy - actually it's a good sign if the interviewing process takes a while! Any job worth having won't tell you "start on Monday" right away - in fact, I would take that as a red flag if they did. (Can't they attract anyone to this job? is what you might wonder.)

At my company you take an aptitude test, and interview with 4 people. If you pass that, you may return and give a presentation to an audience, and will go before the senior board at the company who will interview you in a roundtable fashion. If that goes well, you tend to hear back pretty quickly.

Best of luck with everything - and so sorry to hear about your cat.

For anybody who gives half a toss, I thought I'd give a quick update on thoughts, feelings etc. about living in the US, considering that I was renowned for my rose tinted specs before I arrived!

It's been about six weeks since we landed and things have gone SLOW. I mean, I thought everything in America was WHAM, BAM and THANK YOU MA'AM, but it actually seems just as slow and difficult to get things done here in the US as it was in Europe.

About a day after I arrived, I had an interview with Sirius Radio... I had my SECOND interview yesterday - more than a month later. And even though they'd whittled it down to two candidates (of which I was one, obviously) it's still expected that there'll be two more interviews before they decide.

Totally not what I'd expected. I thought it was a case of walking through the door and being told 'start on Monday.'

But it's an amazing job, so hopefully it's worth the wait.

In the mean time, I've been working in pharmaceuticals and MAN is that a head trip. The whole medical insurance / pharma / doctor thing is pretty crazy. But it's nice to get a paycheque and the guys I work with are nice. The girls get me to read their steamy romance novels out loud during the lunch break because of my accent.

I have bought a car! My wife wanted a sensible Camry or something, but I thought: Bugger that. I didn't move to the USA to drive some Jap piece of crap. So we bought a 21 yr old Lincoln instead, that's literally wider than our house in the UK.

The crazy thing is that it does the same MPG as the 'economic' american car we've been driving. What is up with that? The TV adverts promote cars with great gas mileage and they're boasting about 28mpg. That's not good! My Renault in the UK did 50mpg!!!!

My wife's beloved cat got run over, which was horrible. That kind of ruined the mood for her. She still misses the UK.

But it's early days. I'm still in the running for this great job. We have an income. All good really.

Right now I'm typing this with a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale because that's the only decent beer the local liquor store sells. And the wife is cooking pork chops.

Cheers!

Hello Roland,

I'm new around here and thought I would say hello. I am sorry to hear about the cat

Good luck with the settling in process - yes, red tape is alive and kicking in the USA, that is the first thing we learned when coming here four years ago, we too thought everything was done quick smart. We learned fast that only happens in the movies.....

I too am still settling in, and usually have at least one thing that surprises me about living in FL every day.

Yesterday it was the back garden on fire because it was struck by lightning
and today it was an email from my bank asking me to rate how well they did with their email response to my complaint to them.....they haven't even replied to my complaint in the first place

Its all good fun though! Good luck. Hope the chops were nice....

Good luck with the job...it's a hassle, but prod often, you never know when someone's fallen a sleep or buggered off...and sure there's nothing wrong with having multiple interviews, but when it takes months, it starts to take the piss...but hey, could be worse, one place I applied at took 9 months to get to me

Actually I have to speak kind of slowly so people understand me. I'm calling all over the US. So far I've decided all people from Georgia are nice and polite. The southern states are really nice. Long Island people are just as ratty as they always were. But they all got flooded yesterday so, hey, karma.

Hello Jersey Girl! I guess we're kind of neighbours now!

I have to admit my eyes have been widened a lot. The thing that's really hit me is the beaurocracy. America's not meant to be beaurocratic, but once you deal with Federal, State and Town laws, rules, taxes, regulations etc. it makes 'red tape' France look like a breeze.

I took my driving test. I love the way the New Jersey Driver's Handbook states: "Regarding traffic circles (roundabouts) there are NO set rules."

Yay! Traffic anarchy!

The cat thing really upset both of us. She had the cat as a kitten and it stayed with the MIL while wifey lived with me in the UK. She was SO happy to be reunited with the pussy and three weeks later... Whomp.

So sad. She was in floods of tears.
Hi mate and welcome back - sorry about the cat too. Regarding the bureaucracy here: Oh dear!!! in my experience, and only in my small experience before anybody takes this as an insult - it is not so much the bureaucracy that is the problem, rather the fact that these people are either negligent or plain stupid. Having had to call the 'city' on numerous occasions this year I have been shuffled around several departments, each telling me different things but, ultimately, it is not their area (read as problem) until I got back to where I started with some very rude receptionist who couldn't even direct my call the to right place to begin with.

When I worked for the council back home I had to deal with all kinds of information requests from members of the public, local councillors and other departments - I dealt with every call courteously and professionally, as should be expected being that was what they paid me for. I have stood in offices here while city employees carried on a personal phone calls for five minutes as I stood waiting. I would have been fired for that back home and would not have complained. Okay, rant over. Other than all that I still love it and I know you will too mate. Good luck

Like anything, dealing with the little things (like bureaucrats) takes time to figure out what works best. Don't go to the DMV on the last day of the month, or on a Friday, but aim for a quiet Tuesday morning and then see if there is a facility a little farther out that might be quicker. I haven't spent more than 15 minutes in a DMV in over a dozen years, despite buying a few cars and renewing my license a couple of times. Just takes time to get into the swing.

As for the job, I'd second the remarks about hiring too fast. If it was a small company with few decision makers, than see you next Monday might work, but for a monster billion dollar public traded company like the one you mentioned, you'd start to wonder 'are they actually calling my references' or 'did they really do a criminal backgound check on everyone here'?

Hello from me too Roland. I was only thinking about 'missing' members in the middle of last night (couldn't sleep, huge storm) and wondered how you were getting on.

PS.It seems you have afew women thinking of you......
