Default Need help to come home

Hello -

I just found this forum and signed up. I'm excited to find it because I've tried moving back on two previous occasions and got disheartened with the difficulty of trying to do it on your own. I moved to the US in the mid-80s and have since acquired a BA, an MA, some good career experience, my own small business, and a family. In short, I am industrious and have a lot to offer. Although I can't complain about my life over here, my spiritual home is in the UK (and I come back so I know all the changes!) and there are too many things I miss more and more being away. I have researched a lot of things about the potential move and I know it's a difficult thing to navigate. I feel that the current economic climate makes it a bit more viable than the last time I attempted to look into it. The hardest obstacle for me is the employment situation. I have great credentials and experience but found it hard to find potential employers who would consider me contingent upon a move. I'm not necessarily expecting an employer to move me (although that would be nice) - but just getting consideration is very hard to come by. I'm wondering if anyone can give me tips on specific job websites - or if there is an affordable agency that does this sort of thing. Also, can anyone tell me what American credentials are worth in the UK? I have a BA in English (Music minor) and an MA in Literature. I have 3 years college teaching experience plus over eight years of managerial experience in the private sector. My CV is decent and I have excellent references... plus I am still a British citizen.

I appreciate any and all help and advice. I'm desperate to come home.

Daniel

Hi Daniel This is my first post (I joined today too) but as I work in recruitment I may be able to give you a few pointers.

I assume from your post that you are looking for a teaching post or management? Is that correct?

There are several agencies that specialise in education and lots of national agencies that have 'education' specialist sectors (try Select Education, Reed etc) but it depends on the geographical area you are looking to return to.
Most will cover management posts from mainstream to senior.exec so its as well to check out websites, email head offices and they will usually put you in touch with the relevant consultant in your field and location.

So...

1) Where are you planning on living?

2) For reputatable recruitment agencies in the UK you may want to search the database on the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) website. This is the site for consultants but there is an agency database too... if you look hard enough. It is there I promise but its not the easiest site to navigate.

3) It is illegal for standard recruitment agencies in the UK to charge you for their services. I dont know whether this is the same for agencies that specialise in relocations as I have no experience of this.

4) There are tons of jobsites available to you. Monster.co.uk of course and fish4jobs.co.uk but you might even try reed.co.uk and of course the recruitment agencies direct. Adecco and Manpower are international. I would probably visit your local agencies and ask them for a contact in their UK branch... at least then if you dont get the service you want you have a 'face' that you can go back and talk to who will hopefully kick their overseas colleague up the whatnot!

BUT

I would say that work in the UK is very hard to come by hence why we are looking for the exit door. Taxes are through the roof, crime is rife, education and health up the swanny without a paddle and salaries are at present not increasing. There have been lay offs, people on strike, lots of folk being offered pay decreases or 3 day weeks.... Its a very sorry affair over here in dear old blighty and getting work is a nightmare. No one replies or even acknowledges your applications. The gov apparently think the worst is over but tell that to the thousands of folk out of work.

Personally, with the current state of things I would stay put... but if you are certain you want to return hopefully the somewhat long winded and probably far too long information above may be of some help.

All the best

It would help people to help you if you said what type of work you are looking for & where in the UK!

Yeah come on over to UCLA - you'll be just in time for the strikes and pay cuts.

I was thinking that a lot of that second to last paragraph could equally apply to Australia!
