Returning to UK

My daughter was born in the UK and has a British passport but we emigrated to Australia when she was only 2 years old so she does not have a UK National Insurance Number.
She is now 18 and is planning on travelling to the UK for an extended period of time and is wanting to work over there. How does she get a National Insurance Number?

Thank you.
Looks like she has to already be in UK in order to do this.
Is it possible to do this before she travels?

One has to be a UK resident to get a NI number, so she’ll need to wait until she’s in the UK to apply.

HTH.

If you claimed Child Benefit for your daughter then chances are she has already been allocated a NINO. She can check this by calling HMRC.

Our son was in a similar position, we left for the USA when he was 4, and he had to wait until he moved back before applying for a NINO. We even went into a Job Centre+ to ask before he came back. You don’t need a NINO to get a job and in fact he started a job while waiting for his NINO interview. He also opened a bank account here without his NINO, which is really only needed to record NI contributions towards the State pension and why it is not automatically issued to folks until they reach age 16.

DL is correct, you receive your NI number when you start work full time. Our Sons had an interview in a DWP office, we had to take their id’s etc and the were issued with a number while we waited (quite a longish wait but at least they had them) maybe contact the dept and see what your daughter may need for this and if she can pre book an appointment so she can get her NI number while waiting then again with COVID they may still not be doing face to face . Good luck I hope your daughter enjoys her travels … any idea where she may be working in the UK?
