I think the whole bagger idea is total bullshit, it gives people a false sense of entitlement. It makes them feel like they are king and gives them a false sense of authority. Then people wonder why the customers come through bitching all the time. You spoil them they just want more, just like kids.
Steve, in this instance bagging is YOUR JOB. If someone grabs a bag and helps you out, that's very nice of them, and I'm sure you appreciate it, but that's not commonly done. It's also not expected. They are doing you a favor when they help out. Get over it.

Oh goody, it's not just me then !! Radical thread? - definitely.

I'm almost a control freak when it comes to stupid packing of groceries. I ask to do it myself (really shocks some cashiers), or go through the self-checkout.

How can it be so difficult? Bread - light and squashy. Tins - hard and heavy. Eggs - derrrr!

Agghh - breathe ......

I also use the fabric reusable and like to pack them myself but if there is a bagger there who wants to pack them that is fine with me.....except I am always having to tell them that they don't need to put the groceries in a plastic bag first and then put it in my fabric bag. I also use the "cold" reusable insulated bags for my milk and yogurts etc, yet again they try to put them in plastic first. Habit, I guess??

Until I signed on to BE I never realized how many things are supposed to bother me.
It's not like I don't have any real problems to deal with.
My local grocery store hires a lot baggers that have Downs syndrome. So it's not the end of the world if they don't do it to everyones satisfaction.

Being something of a househusband at the supermarket I do place the larger bottles first, followed by the tins and then meat and down to the softer articles, ending up with eggs. This prevents any crushing or cramming in of articles etc. Never had a problem at the checkout.
