This is really sad news Jim
I met Colin on several occasions whilst working on the Ford road shows, a really nice and very modest bloke.
RIP Colin.

Very sad a great loss to the sport. Thoughts go out to his family.

Anybody any idea how the safety of helicopters compares to planes? From the news over the years it seems as though it’s not unusual for helicopters to crash with well known people in.

The last major celeb, I can think of, to perish in a Helicopter Crash was Stevie Ray Vaughn, at East Troy, Wisconsin. Eric Clapton was scheduled to ride with him, but, wanted to see another artiste perform, so he stayed behind.

The ratio of helicopters to planes is a hard one to compare, as 'copters are vastly outnumbered by planes.

Sad news - he was fun to watch and like someone else said, always came over as a decent bloke.

On the other question, wasn't there a premier league owner killed recently in similar circumstances to one of his predecessors.....? Something ringing bells...

http://www.helicopterlawyers.com/cau...accidents.html

Interesting link, sounds like a Helicopter is more 42 times more likely to go down then a plane....

The statistics presented showed that the helicopter accident rate was 7.5 per 100,000 hours of flying, whereas the airplane accident rate was approximately 0.175 per 100,000 flying hours

Pretty sobering statistic...did you find anywhere where they defined the plane population - ie is that ALL planes, or just light aircraft..? I guess if you include longhaul commercial flights the hours are going to get way skewed bearing in mind its mainly the first and last couple of minutes of a flight that cause the problems. Be interesting to see how the private light aircraft accident rate compares to private helicopter accidents....off to google!

Mathew Harding, part owner of Chelsea, and a few buddies were killed about 5 years ago, on their way back home from a Chelsea/Merseyside Game

I never did like the idea of one big rotor keeping them up there
Anything goes wrong and you are done for..... Our return flight in Jan this year had an engine problem as we were about to take off We had to sit on the tarmac for 3 hours so they could fit new parts. That plane had 4 engines and even then if I had the chance I would have got off.
Virgin say that any plane that crosses an ocean should have at least 4 engines .... I agree with them
