Default Question about rental properties

Does anyone have experience of private landlords in the UK being more open to doing home improvements in a rented home? My daughter in NYC was not allowed to paint or remove some awful wallpaper in her appt. I was raised in a council house in Scotland and my parents were basically allowed to decorate as they liked but wondering about private lets. Thanks!

Really all you can do is to ask the landlord, many will allow it, subject to their approval, some won't. Councils allow you to decorate at will as you are likely to be there for a long time, private landlords less so as the usual contract is only 6 or 12 months.

We let out our house, and the tenants have re-painted most rooms and even put paper up on one wall in the living room. It's written into the contract that they must return it back to a neutral paint color, if we request them to, when they leave the property.

It will entirely depend on your tenancy agreement but a standard clause is that any decoration or alteration of the property must be agreed in writing with the landlord.

But most landlords I've rented from are fairly laid back about repainting and the like providing it's nothing too extreme.
