Okay I will elaborate a little,

Moved back to the UK after living the the US for 6 years. Used to read the online UK papers about broken Britain, overrun with illegal immigrants, teenager yobs mugging everyone, how expensive it is and the usual complaints about the weather. We lived in a beautiful neighbourhood in the US it was very safe and pretty, had a huge house, two nice cars each and a good standard of living. So returning to a place painted so badly by the UK press was a little worrying.

However, the UK is the same place we left 6 years ago, only now I appreciate all the things I took for granted. The walks I take through the countryside with the stunning scenery are wonderful, being back amongst family and friends far outweighs everything we had in the States. The teenagers in the majority are just teenagers, and I havent seen evidence of being overrun by illegal immigrants, and its as expensive as its always been :)

We enjoyed our time in the US and yes our standard of living higher but only in monetary terms, we could have easily stayed and had a good live but without family and friends to share it with it means nothing really imho.

This is all my opinion dont want to offend or start a huge debate just wanted people to know the UK is still a lovely place to live.

Huddersfield really is in an ideal position...surrounded by stunning countryside...I just love the moors....near the bigger Cities in Yorkshire and fairly easy into Manchester if you need the big City fix.......glad you appreciated what a lovely Country we have and pleased your enjoying the many wonderful attractions it has to offer. Some people you will never convice but as long as you and yours are happy then in my mind you have hit "Jackpot"....we are heading home in April and we have never taken notice of the papers...when we are "back home" everyone is still a nice as when we left...still friendly, happy with their lot etc....

Hi Teresa,I'm glad someone is seeing some positives!;)I've never been to your neck of the woods but it sounds very nice!It does depend alot I think where you live in the Uk to how happy and content you are.My daughter relocated to a different city(uk)and really does'nt like it.(I won't name it as it might offend someone).She only moved there because her partner got a uni placement there.But yes everytime we visit,its pretty damn depressing!On the other hand I knew people in South Australia that also lived in some pretty dire places too and were'nt happy!I think its the countryside for us that amazes me the most.So many public walkways available to us,whether its coastal or hill walking or anything in between!So much to do as well is'nt there?And travelling?Well I have been to some truly spectacular places around the world in the 10 years I have been back in the UK.Places I would of only dreamed about had I stayed in Australia.This country has been so good to me,and I truly appreciate living back here.Best of luck and have a great life!:thumbsup:

I cant believe you dont think it's changed it was the first thing I noticed when I moved back was how much the place changed. Obviously depends on where you are but there certainly have been lots of changes.

I did think it had changed in certain ways and please believe me for the better.....again depends on where you live but that is the same anywhere in the world....my friend lived in a lovely area of Germany (she is German)..typical postcard area...then through family problems and lack of money had to move to a large German city and in a terrible area (her words)...she loves the saying "swings and roundabouts"....she looks at it as she was so glad she had her childhood where she did and will do everything to "get out" of the area she lives into a nicer one...

Thanks for this post - I read too much of the Daily Mail as I find it more up to date than the Times online. I am very scared that we are making a mistake. My biggest concern is the crime - they paint such an awful picture. I am no innocent, having lived in two major cities, but they make it sound like you are all lucky to be alive! I must say that out here in Texas, guns are a'plenty. The one thing I like (and I didn't think I'd ever say this) is the fact that home defense is so expected from the criminals out here that home invasions/thefts are very very low, especially at night. In my huge master-planned neighbourhood they publish the crime stats every month - average 2 break ins a month.

Hi I live near Bath and whenever I go there,be it day or night,I feel completely safe.I live in a small village and feel very safe.I don't know what its like to live in a big city,so can only comment about my area.All big cities around the world have crime,thats life(unfortunately)but be realistic.We're not all living in fear!;)

The Daily Mail is the worst. There is crime in the UK as there is in the US its just reported on more. We also lived in a virtually crime free neighbourhood but it was only one of two in the greater Memphis area that was really safe.

Dont let the awful newspapers put you off, find a nice place to live and enjoy what the UK has to offer.

Things do change though over time, it's inevitable. The only thing i noticed that changed was afew old shitty pubs shut down. Good, always was too many pubs.

Please please please do not rely on the 'Daily Mail' for anything in relation to an accurate reflection on British life. It is racist and imflamatory!

I came back to the UK in July 09 kicking and screaming from Canada and yes I would return to Canada tomorrow but unfortunately my wife could not settle. We have both been very lucky as we were on career breaks so we walked back into full time jobs.

The UK is absolutely fine, it does have negatives but the positives for me far outweigh those and has made it somewhat easier to remain here. Lush green fields, culture, locals, amazingly cheap grocery shopping, NHS and TV (if you watch it) are just a few items.

I have found it difficult but that is not because the UK is a toilet but because I personally felt very at home in Canada, I am making the most of what I have and because my wife is my best mate the UK will continue to be home for me!
