all points duely noted. i'll say no further, i can't apparently, though it seems ok for others to take general swipes at me, i am not allowed to reply.
thanks to people like butch though, who actually brought another perspective to the discussion without sly or not so sly digs at me personally. my apologies to anyone offended, this simply was my thinking at the time from the impression it gave me and i still stand by most of it.

No, you were simply warned not to post aggressively with regard to a post in a totally different forum. Everyones opinion is equally valid.
Anyway, I dont see this has any place in the maple leaf, so Im moving it to MBTUK where it belongs.

Kingsdown for me 1975 - 79 right under the shadow of the hospital chimney. I admit to a panic attack in the mens suiting department of M & S shortly after my arrival there due to serious culture shock - however, I had just moved from the Highlands of PNG so maybe there was some excuse. Wouldnt mind moving back to the same house but we couldnt afford it and the DH would want a tad more garden. Bristol at least has character which is more than can be said for Canberra - and within an hour's drive you can get far more variety than you can within a 10 hour drive of here.

Bottom line is that every country has its slums and its ratbags, the graffitti and grunge. If you can find one that doesnt then good for you, go for it.

nope, just me it appears. put in the canada forum as i felt it was appropriate there for people who look back on england fondly, but specifically to their circumstances. obviously caused a stir following though. i assume this person will be returning to the green and pleasant land shortly from Australia and his knuckle dragging purgatory.

Depends why they left in the first place, if for better family life etc and they havent got it then all they know is to return to where they came from......
I get where you are coming from, those pictures are lovely, i lived 5mins from open countryside, lovely house, lovely stuff around me and i sold the lot for pennys to be here..............
Why people would ask, because i am actually happier now than i have ever been in my WHOLE life and i can say that because it is my view on life.
My daughter says that we had a rich life in the uk to now, people take that out of context with her and have been offended, but we had material goods and that is what it was material.
As a family we made the best move for us, maybe others thought they had but didnt and have to return, others never really looked at it long term....
Britain is a lovely country no matter if you have a 60k or 2 million pounds house......but i would never live there again, but nice to see the history

Re: photos of what home exactly?!!
I lived in the centre of the Cotswolds before moving here, and loved it. I moved because I fell in love with a Canadian and one of us had to move, so it was me. I've visited most of the UK so thought that Canada would be a different experience for me.
I've been here nearly two and a half years and love it, though the first few months were hard. Everybody's situation and life experiences are different though, and someone in their early 20's with a positive outlook on life may find wherever they move to in the world a lot different to someone in their 50's who has lived through the Thatcher era.
I think sometimes we get too hung up on the negatives in a thread without looking at the positives.
