Try petfinder.com for rescue/shelter animals - you can enter your age/sex/size/colour requirements.

I used petfinder to find the shelter I would use. Went yesterday, chose my kitten, filled in form.....then they tell e they want written proof from our leasing office that we can have pets grrrrrrrrrr, leasing office was closed, and is closed today........gotta get them to fax it over tomorrow but hubby is busy at work and cant take me.....so i have a slim chance that someone he works with can take me tomorrow - but they ill only hold my kitten for 1 more day grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

why does it all have to be so hard!!!!

agreed.

Even if the petshop keeps them in relatively good condition, a lot of petstores still buy them from puppy mills. Bitches are kept in disgusting conditions as breeding machines in the mills. They are kept in tiny cages in their own pee and poo...it's revolting.

Also someone mentioned backyard breeders....
please, please, please don't get any animals from of these money grabbing b%$#tards. We were totally naive and bought our dog from someone in the local paper. We spent the next year and a half of constant medical problems only to eventually be told by a specialist that the only humane thing to do would be to put him out of his misery.
Not a day goes by I don't miss him. Please save yourself the heartache of buying the product of bad breeding

Melly - the reason for the proof is that it's really common for people who live in apartments to get pets while not following complex rules, and to turn them out when they are caught, or if they don't want to pay the $$ you have to pay oftentimes to have an animal in an apartment. A friend of mine who works at the office in an apartment complex in Florida has a crazy number of pets (14) because when notices would be sent out regarding the pet policy people would ditch their pets, and she's a softie and took them in. This happens around college campuses every year when school lets out, etc.

Of course you wouldn't do that, but they're probably just safeguarding against other adopters who wouldn't do their homework regarding policies, etc. first.

Hang in there and enjoy your kitty. Just think - you're giving a kitten a second chance, and are making a difference as a result. (Just be sure to get it spayed/neutered!)

I totally agree with their reasons for doing it, im just rubbish at being patient lol!!!!!

Kitty has already been spayed as well - another reason for me choosing this particular shelter!!!

Trust me, I understand how hard it is to be patient when it involves a new pet! In the meantime, buy the bowls, some toys, a litterbox, etc. and have everything ready for the arrival.

You did say France didn't you? Enough said. I'd just like to add I am not grouping your mum in the latter category...like you said it was France. At least she was more interested in finding good homes for the pups...which is more than can be said for breeders who let them go to pet shops.
Good breeders do breed not-so-perfect dogs. They do not improve the bloodline or are show quality therefore they do not command the high dollar that those looking for this type of dog are willing to pay. However, many of these dogs make great pets and the potential owners at least know the breed's characteristics unlike some rescue dogs/mutts. I've had two very bad experiences doing this and unfortunately it has turned me off from doing it again in the future. My bro though still volunteers at a shelter and is always bringing home a dog from death row

Of course there is always the possibility of a 'runt' of the litter. As you say they make great pets and probably cost less then the rest. However a good breeder would not sell a runt to a pet store.
