i know this may seem petty to some folk but i'm really worried about getting my dog
(Charlie) into the US..having spent a long time trawling around div of quarantine
sites i'm still no better off....does anyone know how long a dog has to be
quarantined for on entry into the US? and does he need a rabies vaccination as were
moving from the UK thanks in advance...fellow animal lovers Jan

there is no quarantine unless you are going to Hawaii, in which case there may likely
be. However, the dog will need to be vet-checked and have current rabies vaccination.
At this point in time, I would call US customs and check on whether you may have any
problems, in view of the current foot and mouth disease outbreak.

Note also that the airline will not accept the pet for travel without the appropriate
certificate from the vet. This holds true for air travel within the borders of the US
as well as with foreign travel. Also note that there are certain diseases prevalent
to certain parts of the US that are not found in others and it is best for your USC
fiancee to check with a vet in her city for a list of innoculations the pet will need
for its new home. In this way the furry critter will not have to settle in to a new
home and suffer through neddle discomfort as well.

i have only experience with my cats when i bought them over but i gather that dogs
and cats are classed the same.. first of all you need to check with the airlines that
your using that they will allow animals on and whether or not you need to pre book
for them..you need full vaccination records as well..also call the state vets for the
airport that you will be arriving in check with them about rabies..our cats had
rabies vaccinations after we arrived because there is no live rabies vacine available
in the uk...one word of advice DO NOT under any circumstances allow any vet and dont
yourself sedate your animals..most airlines wont allow sedated animals on board...i
suggest you get a proper container as well i.e. a box with water spout..if you are
leaving via heathrow there is a kennels just near to it that you will be able to buy
proper boxes for them...good luck

one more thing you need to get a certifcate of health from your local vet no more
than 7 days before your dog travels

Perhaps that is your personal thoughts, however, Cheyenne was sedated both going to
Vegas and returning from Vegas on authorization and recommendation of both the NY and
NV vets that cared for her. The airlines (TWA and TowerAir) didn't care one way or
the other.
