Perth to UK

Hi, we are in the early stages of thinking about moving back, though it is more of a when rather than if. My best guess would be sometime late next year.
Now i know i am going to have to save some $$$ as we have no house to sell here but the question is how much? As that will have an impact on when we go.
So i would like to ask anyone who has recently moved back from Oz, particularly WA what your shipping costs were. We moved here 3 years ago and didnt bring anything with us other than cloths and personal items and the company paid for that so havent a clue. I would guess that we would need a container. Though maybe not a full one if part / half containers are possible?

Re: Perth to UK

I moved back recently from Perth, and am waiting on my container to arrive.
We had Kent, Allied Pickfords and Grace quote on the shipping on a sole use 20ft container. They all started out at 7000 - 8000, we managed to get all to discount and eventually used Kent at a cost of $6400. I'm not really impressed with them so far, however I'll reserve judgement until the container arrives. If nothing is damaged, it's all good.
I didn't use the insurance offered by Kent as it was going to cost around $1100, I insured directly with Letton Percival at a cost of £225.
We sold most of our big furniture before we left, but still managed to fill a 20 footer.
Why not look into hiring / buying your own container and doing the shipping yourself? I know people who have done this....too much hassle for me though.

Thanks for that. I was hoping to do it and the dog for under $10k and it seems we could.

We used Grace for the move from Sydney to Perth and they were excellent, but company paid and havent a clue what the cost was.

Looking at posts it looks like the dog will cost about $3k, so if i can get the container for $7k then i am on budget.

Are you glad to be back?

Is it a big dog you have? We shipped our Alaskan Malamute at a cost of $4600 plus the additional Rabies jabs and blood tests costs.
Yes we are very happy to be back.

Mine is the complete opposite. The tiny little yellow thing in my avatar is my chihuahua in his rain coat and hat.

What were your reasons for heading back? Ours our mainly financial. Just finding Oz too expensive to be worth it.

We just grew tired of Australia and wanted to come back to the UK. We were fortunate enough to have been mortgage free and after selling our house, are quite comfortable now. I suppose I should be thankful to Australia for that:)
We are all Australian Citizens so can return should we decide too. Ideally I'd love to be in a position to have a home in both Oz and the UK, my wifes aunt and uncle have this. Best of both worlds then.

Hi we moved a year ago from Perth (south of the river) to Derbyshire. I had 3 quotes from various companies , we picekd a company then "debated" their quote and got a better offer, I cannot remember the exact cost now..sorry but it was around the $2,000 we went with Chess as they were happy to "haggle" with the price and the English guy Paul who quoted us gave good advice as well on how to save. Half containers are even cheaper but if you only have clothing items etc try other methods, ie Aus post etc, If I had my time again I would of sold most of our items and just shipped personnel things etc...Best wishes

Just read about your dog...the cheapest by far quote we had for our dog was with our local boarding kennels who we had used for our dogs when we went on holidays....with 6 weeks boarding after we left Perth and flights included...we picked our dog up at Manchester Airport where she was flown in...the company is called Paws and Claws and they are near the Airport...they were excellent and the price came to $1200 (if I remember rightly) contact number 0894536287..once again best wishes

Thanks for that. The price for the dog is a lot cheaper than i was expecting. I have thought about leaving furnishings here, but we bought everything new when we came to oz. So everything is 3 year old or less and all was good quality. Our bed was about $2k. So it would cost a lot more to replace.

Did your container arrive yet? can you advise on if you would recommend Kent or not? It's nearly my turn to return & am starting to gather quotes. Thanks

What's with the mass exodus from Perth?! ha! ha! We are also returning, having been here 5 yrs, have opted only to take personally affects back, no big items. (seems cheaper to buy in UK than ship back) Have had a quote from Wridgeways, for near $3000 for I think about 25-30 boxes but am phoning somemore this week, so will let you know.

For our dog we are using JetPets. They seem to have good feedback tho' is going to cost us $4000 (ouch!)

Good luck, know what those early days are like, when you start thinking about returning to UK. We agonised over the decision at first. Shall we/shan't we & had a few wobbles along the way, so ended up drawing a Pro's & Con's list to deal with them! In the end we figured out it wasn't the actual decision, that was giving us the wobbles, it was FEAR, fear of the unknown.

Once we recognised that, we would write each little worry down & work out how we were going to counteract it. Now we just can't wait to get back. Waiting for our house to sell & excited about the next chapter in our lives..... Good luck:)
