I don’t think there’s any good answer to that.

In my case, our house in NY is never unoccupied for more than a few weeks, as my wife is in residence, and our flat in England is leasehold, so insurance is covered by the service charge - leaving me with just home contents uninsured.

The time we did it we were only away 90 days at a time and the insurance company charged extra plus assurances that someone was checking on it. This was insurance through the Darlington Building Society.
