Have you tried a reverse address approach?

How about calling the local police non-emergency or the village hall or church?

Police were no help. I understand that. They said to call the county but I had already done that.

Do you mean they have changed telephone numbers or that the number you had is now no more.

I subscribe to several people search type sites for genealogy purposes.
If you wish you could Private Message me the details, in confidence of course, and I would be happy to see if I could turn anything at all up for you.

How long to lose an adopted accent?
Somthing amused me today. I was in Scarborough M&S cafe and had a couple sentences conversation with a lady also in the queue.
She then asked "Are you an American?"
That surprised me because I thought that, apart from the occasional uncontrolled Toe-may-toe, I had reverted to some kind of Midlands accent.
I am enjoying this visit to N.Yorkshire, people are very nice. I have been smiled and nodded at in greeting more times in a day than in a year in King's Lynn (and yes, my fly was zipped up).

I visited Yorkshire earlier this year, loved it and look forward to visiting again. If I felt the need to move from my current location, Yorkshire would be high on my list of options.

Some years ago I was surprised that a nephew who had grown up in Hampshire was now speaking with a broad Sottish accent. After he left Scotland and moved to Essex his accent changed again.

On Friday one of the ambulance crew sent to me expressed surprise that after 50 years in Oz I didn't have that accent. I detected her Aussie accent, yet she is English and had lived in Australia for only a few years.

Adopted accents can drag on, but I don't know why some of us don't pick up accents.

Some people pick up accents very easily, and can be using them within a couple of days, others not so quickly, takes years.

Same thing happens to me John. I thought I was diehard Geordie but I've been asked if I'm Canadian or American as well because there's "something" there in my twang. I must say though that it's a nice feeling that everyone around me talks the same (or almost the same) as me since this move.

I have to agree about North Yorkshire; we loved our time in Scarborough. Enjoy your visit and if you fancy fish and chips, we always liked Hanover's.

On the other side of the coin of accents, our meal server last night had an Irish influence in his English, yet was from Latvia. Love it and loving the Yorkshire accents too.

Will look for Hanovers, ty for the tip. We had Fish n Chips in Whitby yesterday, great but it needs to be at £12.50 a plate.

That's getting rather pricey; rather like Colman's in South Shields though you do get a glass of your plonk of choice and a cuppa thrown in there.
