Yes, go to a Borzoi rescue group. There will be many rescue dogs. Hounds are hard to place........glamorous but with all of the hound traits.
When are you leaving and wherever you settling? I love to stay in touch with dog people and hope to continue as a dog judge in Europe.

Hi Celtic, what breed of dog do you have. I used to breed and show Border Collies back in the UK and judged several breeds in the Pastoral Group. :)

Aw, when I was a kid, I begged and begged my parents for a dog. I cried until they agreed and we went up to a farm somewhere in Yorkshire and brought back Ben, a lovely border collie, but the runt of his litter and the one none of the farmers wanted.

He was the most loving dog in the world. Of course, when I became a teenager, the responsibility slowly devolved to my parents and then I took off for college and there they were, stuck with a dog they never wanted.

My dad used to pretend he didn't care about Ben - he'd call him 'your dog' - but he loved him to little bits. Late at night, I'd hear him talking to Ben before he went to bed, whispering in a baby voice. And Ben followed him everywhere. He was my dad's dog from the first day.

One time Ben disappeared. Mum and dad were due to go away for the weekend and I was house-sitting. Dad wouldn't leave until we found Ben. He said "your mother will never relax unless we know he's OK." Mum was saying 'I'm fine! Let's go!' but he kept insisting she would be too worried - even then he couldn't admit it was he who was the worried one! Finally we found Ben at the local playing fields rounding up the kids who were trying to play football (his favorite thing).

When he got very old, he got arthritis and when it got too bad, they had to have him put to sleep. The vet came to the house, and dad held Ben on his lap until he passed. He never said, but I know he must have cried.

Mummy, I have to admit that I am pretty addicted to my gym. To be honest it has been my saving grace over the last two years, with few friends and little social life, its been the place that I can meet people and save my sanity at the same time. I do Zumba (its a good laugh, isnt it ), Boot camp, Body sculpt with weights and lots of cardio classes. Love the vibe as its a huge place with ice rinks (natch!! this IS Cananda after all!) swimming pools, saunas, basketball, circuit training, all one could wish for. Plus I get a special rate once I turned 55!

Sounds good. I go to my Curves class 3 times a week and its a good place to meet people. They've just started Zumba there but I haven't tried it yet, as we are currently away, but am looking forward to it. I do find though that I still have to do other cardio to keep the weight down. Curves by itself isn't enough for me. Usually in summer I walk every day but once the snow falls, that it for me:lol:

Sally, we definitely ARE twins. I had a border collie too when I was a teenager, from the RSPCA, and also left her with my parents. I remember once before we were married, my husband was visiting me at my parents for the weekend, and she got lost. He and I spent hours and hours looking for her, driving, walking, calling her name, (me crying all the time), and eventually found her in the garden shed, of all places. She had been there the whole time, not even barking:confused: We were sooo happy to see her pretty little face. Anyway, she lived to be 13 and was my Dad's best friend until she died:(

SomersetGirl, Curves are pretty good, but yes, you need some good cardio if you want to trim down (which is the story of my life :frown:) thats why I do a class - I find it more motivating with other people around and dont have to contend with the snow and crappy temps. -22 it was the other day!! Where in Canada are you?

I love it, it's a tiny place, some classes can be a bit full. The woman that owns/runs it is amazing and so sweet, her kids are there too and she has a play room and a babysitter, so for $1 you can leave the kids in the playroom while you exercise, I've been thinking of doing the body sculpt, I need the cardio for my cholesterol (borderline) so we'll see if it helps.

The only way we're different appears to be that I am not even remotely happy about exercising

I put on 50lbs when I stopped smoking and lost 30 of it 2 years ago on WW. I forced myself to go for walks, but mostly I did it just by eating more healthily. Then I got some still undiagnosed joint pain and that put the kibosh on walking - but really I think I was just looking for an excuse because I really hate exercise more than I can say. (Is that another way of saying I'm bone idle? :D)

I am in awe of all you ladies (and men?) who are not so lazy. The good news is I got back on the healthy eating bandwagon and so I'm now chipping into that last 20 lbs.

Got news for you: there are only little courtyards in the back of houses here - very high density housing, kept in the medieval style, if not actually ancient. I was at the Community Meeting tonight, regarding a 12 acre building site that has been up for development for years - lots of arguments, and so far the town has managed to keep out the big box retailers - Asda got in on the outskirts of town, so far away I have not been there - have to take a bus or drive. Any new development has to blend in with the old, and there has to be a blend of housing and business, with housing having a percentage for rent and the rest for sale. So - yes, knock down the back walls or have little gates between them, with no gates in the spaces...I could go for that.

I quit smoking in 1985, put 30 lbs on very fast, then went to WW and lost 20 of it, have been working on the last 10 ever since, up, down, up down, up down. Swimming works the best for me, then walking. Have you tried flaxseed for your joint pain? I have problems with joint pain in my feet and since I started taking flaxseed with my oatmeal in the morning, it has improved dramatically:D It has to be ground and you have to take it every day....I originally took it just for general health, lowering cholesterol etc and didn't even know it was good for joint inflammation, so it was a wonderful bonus. If you try it and it works, you don't have to tell anyone, then you still won't have to exercise:rofl:

I like the way you think

I haven't tried that but I will. The doc put me on megadoses of Vitamin D which helped ease the pain (and also got rid of my migraines totally which was a nice surprise). But the pain is still there and I'll try anything. Thanks for the suggestion.

You only need to take 1 tablespoon daily, but if you take any medication, you should leave at least a couple of hours between the meds and the flaxseed, as it tends to move things through your system quickly (that's my polite English way of putting it) so you would lose the benefit of your medication:lol: You probably won't notice a difference for a few weeks, but hopefully it will help.

On joint pain, I had it really bad at one point -- I thought I had rampaging arthritis -- but it turned out to be the new and expensize sneakers I'd bought because I thought they'd be so much better for my exercise than my beat up old ones.

I also get joint pain from two foods -- almonds and corn. Don't know why, but if I eat much of either I'm in agony in my hips and knees.

Lastly, a lot of people get joint pain with gluten intolerance, but that usually also has gut symptoms.

I need to find some exercise I like, but I am enjoying walking more now we're back in England.

Need a little input here. When I finally get back to UK I'll probably settle in the south of England. I have an American accent, been here 40+ years. I arrived talking like Bob Marley after having been in West Indies for 10 years. Somewhere in the beginning of time I had a Scottish accent.

I was lurking over in an Aussie forum last night and was shocked at the venom spewed against Americans. They (and I realize they are not representative of ALL Aussies) seem to think Americans are pretty much universally hated.

I'm thinking maybe (because I'm in LA and there's lots of voice and accent coaches) I should seriously try to get rid of this accent. I want my transition to living and traveling about Europe to be as hassle free as possible.

No way ,please don't do that .

Ok ,I have skimmed over masses of it :(

This is why I tend to stay away from the rest of this forum ,it happens regularly .

Boring banter IMO .

You still have nothing to worry about :)

I think (unfortunately ) when we see it on a message board, we assume it is a concrete feeling with many .

Not true ,my Husband spent 11 years in the UK ALL in London ,(where one might expect trouble ,in prominent jobs with Joe public ) and yet no negative comments of that ilk were made at all .

If you read the posts/scrutinize them a bit ,you will see they are taking out of their butts !!!!

Sorry ...I just feel very sorry that you would ever need to change YOU and all that YOU are .:)

I think most Europeans see beyond the American = must be like George Bush mentality, but there are idiots everywhere.

Wondering how I would be treated, just based on the accent, before they had the opportunity to dislike me for myself. LOL
Yes, I'm one of those stunned, perpetually in a state of culture-shock, dragged around the globe in my formative years, kind of people.

Don't worry .

Even if you were the most wonderful person in the world, someone would find something wrong lol !

It is understandable that you want to cover all bases ,eliminate all problems -it just can't be done KWIM ?

I sense you are looking/searching for somewhere to call home ....? you will in time :)

So where are you heading exactly ? do you know yet ?

That's the Barbie - a law unto themselves.

I agree it's very unlikely aviva will come across any negativity regarding her accent. A 'coached' British accent is probably going to sound daft.

Sadly I have often encountered people making comments behind someone's back regarding race, but not purely on someone being an American.
