I don't do it often these days but I love a bit of gravy-soaked bread.
My SIL asked me tonight if she could be really common and have a piece of bread to soak up the gravy from the Beef Bourginon I had made. I took her "commonness" as a compliment. Either that or she was still hungry.

And I thought everyone in the UK had it, I love soggy chips, the gravy sure helps, bang on a pie and some mushy peas and I've got dinner...

Then you would like Adelaide's pie floater.

http://www.thepiecart.com.au/piefloater.html

I've had just one but didn't like the taste of the mushy peas.

Chips and gravy seems to be very popular here, my wife loves it.

Those that remember me will know i moved back to UK 2 years ago now.. its been great and I have no complaints about anything..not really. I have had to have some Physical therapy to my neck and the service I got was great and very fast.. got in 5 days after I went to docs.. I have no complaints at all about NHS even though I live in a big city with big Hospital, no complaints and my mum got fantastic care all the time..

My reason for being here though is to let all who know me know that I am moving back to the USA, I go on Dec 5th, not an easy or happy choice in many ways. I would love to be able to stay here but I have 3 children who although 21 x2 and 22, so not exactly young, we have all had a hard time of missing each other.
I am very scared about going back.. life here has just got easier for me, I get my pension and a small private pension so was only working 15 hours a week. I will be going back to full time and with lots of challenges I guess. But I am glad I did this and have had a wonderful two years although filled many times with sadness at the difficulties it brought my children.
I think I will have more time when I am back there to read on here and get caught up.

I wish you all well and may your dreams come true!!
Hi Denise,
Everything you say makes perfect sense, we all deserve to be happy wherever we live, its not easy making a life here in UK when all we have known for a big chunk of our life is America, and its particularly harder when you are split between the two countries by way of family, especially your Kids,
Denise good luck on starting your life again on the other side of the pond, you will be fine!!!! and look you gave it a great try here in UK, and thats all any of us can do and in the future sometime you can always come back here for Holidays,
Take care,
Rodney.

Dh thinks they have delivered it all to the wrong address somewhere where it's gone into storage for someone who hasn't arrived yet or is waiting to unpack when they move into a house or something. I'm most concerned about all my kids baby books and things like that, that can't be replaced and have no value to anyone but us.
I hope they find your belongings soon. Our movers lost one of our boxes filled with unimportant stuff that could easily be replaced, unlike your items. Partly my fault & partly theirs. Anyway, for the longest time they couldn't find it. I eventually decided to put a claim in for the items and suddenly my box was found.

Soggy chips? I like mine to be a little crisp on the outside, so probably better in England for me to cook my own.

We spent a few days in Montreal and I'd heard that Canadians rave about 'poutine' and that it is one of those things that you just have to eat when you are there. I think it is native to Quebec but I don't know if the French Canadians have spread this unique cuisine to the rest of Canada?

It is chips covered with gravy.....and cheese curds.. I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not, it's definitely an acquired taste!

Never understood the attraction myself; countless times I'd see people stuffing themselves with it in the restaurant at the hotel I used to work at over there & I'd find myself getting a bit nauseous.

It is available in other parts of Canada, but it is a Quebec thing. I could never bring myself to try it.

its a variation of the British 'chips & mushy peas with curry sauce on top' - both are disgusting IMO

I never had gravy on chips in England, I think its more of a northern thing, I maybe wrong, but all this talk about gravy on bread and on chips reminds me of an American dish I used to love now and then when I used to go into a cafe or casino restaurant in Nevada, an open faced hot steak sandwich was always on the menu, it was an 8 ounce steak served on top of two slices of bread, with chips and all covered in brown gravy emmmm Lovely, and also dont forget the well known american pleasure ---- biscuits & country gravy.
