I'm watching a show on BBC about summer madness on the railway lines around Leeds. I can't believe what these traindrivers have to put up with!! I hope this is not typical of all railway lines.

As I still have a confused brain:) I will agree to anything that you all agree on as long as we can all still share our thoughts and ideas and sometimes our fears and disappointments:(

There is something, a poll I think, in today's Manchester Guardian and they are asking which is is the worst train company in England. If you have a couple of hours you can get an insight into today's trains by reading the results.
Not good.

For her everything is free!!!! lucky lady.

I think we should call it over 30s for awhile until we call it over 20s.:D

Exactly what I was thinking, Cheers.

I just finished watching Panorama on the BBC iPlayer. They did a show about the horsemeat scandal in the UK. Apparently, eating horse meat on the continent is quite common. One issue that was not addressed is why humans are eating horsemeat PERIOD! They kill enough animals. In addition to pigs, cows and chickens, they are now killing horses and buffalo! Why? How many more species do humans have to consume because of an ever increasing population base? It's just not right. And at this rate, how long will it be because burgers with, say, 15% horse meat, are allowable on the shelves in the UK - especially if it is acceptable in France?

I don't even remember horse meat being eaten by humans anywhere 30 years ago. Granted I was young and didn't know too much about what went on in other countries, but if the horse meat issue is an EU issue, I would be ready to ditch the EU on this count alone.

How long will it be before I have to watch my dogs constantly when I let them outside for fear they end up in burgers or a restaurant somewhere?

I don't eat much meat as it is - on principle because it's not fair to the animals. I hope there comes a time when I don't eat any.

Got that off my chest!! ;)

Horsemeat has been eaten on the continent for years, and can be seen in many butchers shops, especially in France and Italy, something for the unwary brit to watch out for if they don't understand French or Italian, it looks a lot like beef, and would be cheaper, so could easily be bought by mistake.

Would you agree that:

There was the main thread.(Over 50s etc).
Then the chit-chat thread was added as a subsidiary one.
For a while there were the two threads.
Then the original one closed, leaving only the chit-chat thread.

Is that right as far as you recall?

Yes, we'll still have slow days--and that's not a problem.
Just as long as new posters realise there's more to us than chit-chat!

Hello Tina.

Here's how I remember it.

Back in the day we had some upset on the Moving back thread, I don't want to get into the details and rehash it, that's just pointless, but I will say a Healthcare thread was formed, many didn't like the Healthcare name, after all we were discussing many things not just Healthcare, sooner than changing the name someone decided to start a third thread, That thread is now the Chit Chat thread, so at one time there were actually three threads, it was all very confusing for most people, after a short time the healthcare thread died, then people got friendly again and posted on both the Moving Back and Chit Chat threads, eventually the Moving back thread was closed and everyone moved to the Chit Chat thread.

I have to say Dunroving doesn't seem to get much credit, he was the guy that suggested Trotty start the original Moving Back thread, I think he was also the person that came up with the name for the the Chit Chat thread.

I'm all for 40 yr olds joining the thread, but wont we get to a point where someone in their 30s feels left out, Maybe it needs something to indicate anyone or everyone is welcome to post...

You make a good point about Dunroving. I must start to show that old codger a little more respect.

Your summary of the thread history is pretty much what I recall.:)

Ah ok Fish, thanks for the clarification.

I'm so sorry if dunroving hasn't been given the credit due! I didn't know anything about his rĂ´le in the creation and naming of the threads--many apologies, dunroving!

I think this thread's strength and focus is that it's a place for older people to air their concerns, very different from those of younger ones as has been said.
So personally I'd like to keep it like that--younger people are by no means unwelcome! But let's keep the focus on our later-in-ife problems.

As we've had specific requests from 40+ people to be included, I think we could do that, as I think these later-life problems and concerns do begin in the forties...

Point is: we're not excluding anyone, anyone can post who wants to.
But we do focus on the concerns of older returnees.

So, I'm still in favour of Pollyana's suggestion:

Over 40s Moving Back and Catching Up.

As has been said, many are hoping to move back but maybe can't. However, to me the title indicates it's a place for discussing moving back, you don't have to be in the process.

But if you prefer, we could clarify, along the lines of:

Over 40s Hoping to Move Back, Moving Back, and Catching up

--I'd be fine with that, but is it a bit long-winded?

It's nice to keep the "catching-up" idea because it means you can just come on to keep in touch with friends.

The thread is BOTH for friendly contact AND serious concerns, something the title should reflect.

The current "chit-chat" one doesn't reflect this--understandably,as it wasn't originally meant to be the only 50s+ thread.

I (and several others including trotty) strongly feel its current title
a) trivialises the thread and b) discourages new posters.

Hence request for a name change.

I hope, for Pollyana's sake, that a consensus becomes clear!

do we accept the title she proposed?
Over 40s Moving Back and Catching Up.

If not, do we prefer some other title?

Or do we want to keep it as is?

I'm still checking back, waiting till some kind of concensus is reached before doing anything!

With regards to the comments by Fish n Chips 56 - we all know there were issues in the past which meant the original thread was split, my point earlier about this being a move forward is to say lets try and forget any previous issues and concentrate on what you guys want the thread to be now.

Anyone is welcome to post on any thread in BE - this point is made often on some of the other forums :) As long as a poster sticks to the rules of the forum they are not exceuded from any thread -regardless of age, race, background etc. I just assumed that the reason for mentioning ages on this thread's title was to show those who of us who didn't grow up in the internet age that there are people here from the same age bracket as us, so we aren't alone :) Beyond that though, there's no barrier to posting just because anyone is too young :) By the same token, there's nothing to stop any of you posting in other threadss if you feel you have something to say - and I know a lot of you do contribute valuable info on other threads, especially for people moving back
