Fridays and other chains came in to our casinos, so of course the prices on everything went up immediately,
I remember I used to go into El-Cortez casino down town and they always had those 99c breakfasts like sausage or bacon & 2 eggs & hash browns & toast & jam, --- or a stack of pancakes, syrup, and two eggs, and coffee was 25c extra, you can still get good breakfasts for say $3.50 though,
Arizona Charlies west and eastside both still have a nice steak & eggs & hashbrowns for $2.49 coffee 50c.
Remember years ago when the boardwalk casino closed down and demolished on the Strip, I was very sad really:( cause I used to work right across the street from there at the Polo Towers timeshare resort, and on my break I often went over there and bought that lovely big strawberry shortcake with lashings of whipped cream on top, 97c each Hmmm:) and they also had lots of food specials,
Vegas still has good deals on food in restaurants and casinos but you just have to know where to go, I always think a good rule of thumb is to stay off the strip, meals and buffets are sooooo expensive there,
For a buffet I always preferred the Suncoast casino for dinner, it was just a short hop from where both of us used to live, me at the Lakes, and you I think Summerlin,
Take care Jackie and again good luck, and live long and prosper!!!
Not too many days now and your be on that big bird in the sky again,
Rodney.

Gosh Rodney, I can really relate to those prices...

When I first went to Vegas back in the 70s you could have steak n eggs in a major name Casino on the strip for $2.50, even cheaper between midnight and 6am, of course that price was meant to get you in the door so you'd gamble, those were the days, today its very expensive, I was in Vegas in May, Bacon and Eggs at the Encore was an outrageous $18, there wasn't much on the plate and it wasn't even good, we never went again, I rate the hotel rooms but not their food, The Luxors Bacon and Eggs was $12, just a few years ago it was $8, I must admit $12 is a lot but still I really enjoyed it.

My in laws fancied a nice steak dinner at a fair price, so instead of going to the Wynn or Luxor like we had in previous years we went to the South Point Hotel and Casino, its about five miles down the strip after you pass the Mandalay Bay, way out of the busy strip area, we ate at their Silverado Steak house and had a terrific meal, it was Top Notch and it wasn't over priced, We will go there again, it was the best Fillet I've ever had, I know people say that a lot but I really mean it...

Over the years we've had some good meals in the Red Rocks Coffee shop, and to be honest the prices are like back home and the food is good so we will go again...

I agree with you the cheaper meals are off the strip, an internet search finds the good deals, we also visited Laughlin, the meals there are cheap but not much cop, lets say we wont be going again, but we did have some good laughs and memories to take with us, I hate when a waitress puts food in front of you together with a lame excuse, its never good...

Wow the Polo Towers I remember that place, so you worked right in the busy part of Vegas, I must admit I was so looking forward to seeing "The City Center" finished but when I did I was disappointed, it seems too big and has taken over that area, I don't care for those buildings that look like they are falling over... I like casinos to sit back in their own grounds, not to be right in your face... Oh well...

Vegas is suffering along with the rest of us, I see hotels that were under construction 2 years ago and they haven't changed a bit, the Fountainbleau which in near The Riviera is close to finished, but I read they were selling off the Interior furnishing, as they've run out of money...
The Echelon sits on the grounds that were previoulsy the Westwood Ho and The Stardust, its just metal girders and concrete, I've seen the plans it looked to be a nice place, but they may never finish it...

Hi Fish,
Yes I certainly agree with you about the city center ----- OMG what an eye sore that is  the whole thing looks like its going to fall down any minute, looks like the head architect may have been just a little tipsy
Next time your in Vegas fish check out the Suncoast casino close to the lakes, thats if your driving, cause its about 10 miles from the main strip area, buffet dinner 4pm till 10.30pm, is really good food from around the world, and make sure you stop off at the rewards center first to get your slot card --- free to join, and then you will get a discount, but its only about $10 with the card and you will enjoy, sure beats anywhere on the strip where you will pay $30 to $45 for a buffet or any meal in a restaurant, again try and stay away from the strip, never used to be like that but the strip has become so expensive now for shows, food, and rooms, (big locals TIP) ---- if you can try and get to a buffet soon after it opens for the dinner it would be great ------ cause everything is super fresh, they have just put everything out and its at its best then:)

HI everyone, again it has been a while since I have been on here, but i find I have been so busy it is hard to keep up with things. Well we have been home now 1 month over the year, we arrived on June 25th 2010, we have had a lot of ups and downs but have to say it took us going back to Canada to realise what we had back here. Are we happy we came back....yes, now that we are finally settled, we have got our lives together and are really enjoying it. I'm glad I went back to Canada, because I would always have wondered "what if" and I would always recommend it to young people to give it a go, it's a great country. We have been lucky to rent a 3 bedroom semi for £550 pm that is really great as the rents at the moment are going skywards due to the fact that people cannot buy the demand for rental is unbelievable, what it will go up to when our years lease is up is anybodys business:eek:bur for now we are sitting back and enjoying things. We have a pay as you go electric system and so far it is working out approx £10 per week (there is just the 2 of us so it will be more expensive for families) we try to shop once a week for essentials and then top up with fresh produce, but I think it works out approx £80 per week. We are with sky so our internet, basic tv channels, and phone (I took out the 24 hour free uk and international calls for £5 per month extra) works out at £43 pm, so I feel we are doing ok. Things are getting a little more expensive grocery wise, but I still enjoy shopping here for both food and clothes and I don't really feel ripped off. The one area I do is fuel, I find petrol/gas/oil companies a total rip off, but then again in Canada I also areas I thought were rip off, so it swings in roundabouts. All I know is this is were I am happiest and glad to be back amongst kith and kin and i realise that it what we are all about, without friends and family we maybe financially well off, but emotionally poor, and that is what we were, deprived and starved of companionship and friendliness, I would never want to be there again. Good luck and God bless Denise:wub:

You know Rodney, it is only natural you are going to miss certain things about the US, after all you have been there a long time, and there are so many good things about the states, I love a lot of things about it, and you know if i won the lottery of a lot of millions, i would buy a property somewhere in the states, and It has a lot going for it (especially if you can afford it), but if I could I would at least have a holiday home there:rolleyes::sneaky:

Beedubya how are you? I have just watched this video and it brought back so many memories, in the background there is a photo of Liberace.... OMG my husband was working in the Hotel Australia, in Adelaide, we married there, and Liberace was a resident, my husband was head waiter then( today the would be called restauant managers)and he looked after Liberace on his visit to Austrailia in 1971/2. Anyway my husband asked him for an autograph, and he took an menu and scribbled something on it. when he gave it to my husband , he had drawn a piano with a candleabra, and said to "Denise with love Liberace", my husband siad he did it without the pen leaving the paper, anyway I gave it to my mother, and when my dad died and the house got sold it disapeared, I was so angry, My husband said he was a real gentleman, so polite and just nice. I suppose not many people remember him butr he was a real showman.

So true Rodney, I watched the couple who won the Euro Millions on TV last night, and I thought that is one obscene amount of money for any one person to have, do you not think there should be a cap put on the amount someone can win and then break it down to say 5 million tops and have more draws? To e that makes more sense and allows more people to win and still have more than enouth to live on and look after family?

Great to hear from you, Denise, and thanks for the update.

So good to hear you are settling in and enjoying it.

In my opinion at least, this post is more than just "chit-chat" and should go on the main 50s & 60s moving back thread, because it's an important insight into the process of moving back and settling in.

Hope all continues to go well!

I enjoyed the Video, I played it a few times, its quite catchy.

Most of that video was taken inside Caesars Palace, many casinos get old and are replaced but Caesars seems to get better, its still a very nice Casino.

I bet that was Liberaces piano, he played Caesars alot, In fact I saw him there in 85, soon after he died, he was certainly a world class entertainer.

Hello Denise.

Thanks for the update, I'm really glad you are doing well and are Happy with your decesion to move back.
All the best for the future... Fish

Ohhhh if only we could all win the Lottery, it would solve our money problems, I too agree that I would have a home in both the UK and USA, maybe two condo's in America, one in Wyoming and one in Oregon...

I'm one that also would love to see lottery amounts capped at a reasonable figure, it would be nice to see it spread around, Id sooner see more millionare winners than one that wins more money than one could spend in a lifetime, the money would circulate better, creating more jobs.

Is it true that that the UK doesn't tax its lottery winners?.

FYI - as this is in the news almost constantly, I looked up this link:

I had no idea he was the owner of all that he is - look at the Australian list! Unreal.

So now I know which papers NOT to buy. :frown::thumbdown:
