My Irish neighbour tells me that it means a child and is short for "sprung from a bog". Course he drinks a lot so he could be having a lend...

Child? Wowee! Not in my reckoning. Came from my stint in the Royal Air Force, and was used to describe new entrants, but for only the first six months.

Although, when I think about the connection, I suppose it could be!

You are right. I was thinking about the USA after I wrote my post. Heaven forbid the UK should become the same, although I see many areas where it is moving in that direction - and many other countries, too. Here comes the global, multinational economies. :(

In one post I read, someone suggested the UK become what Switzerland is or used to be. Not a bad idea. It has also made me question what Scotland would do about immigration if Scotland ever became a separate country (although that is not my personal choice).

I didn't think about the problem being with the children/young adults of the immigrants but, of course, they are the ones who would be the problem because many of them were probably born in the UK and so it is now their country, too, and they practice what they have been taught by their parents and in their own "religious venues". I wish I could think of a good solution for this mess. Ohh, how I wish the people who pass these laws had thought out all of this much more clearly beforehand!!

Maybe, too, it is time the UK reverted to being an independent country, separate from the EU. I am darned if we should lose control over the laws of our own country.

Of course, no matter what is happening over there, it won't change my decision to return. It is always going to be better than the USA and, above all, it's home.

It would grieve me greatly to see the British culture disappear.

PS: I forgot to mention, per your comment, Cheers, that I have been away 30 years. I never wanted to come to the USA and always regretted it. At the time I had little choice in the matter.

Rodney,

After I finished watching a recorded programme, the TV went to the awards show so I saw a little bit of it before heading to bed. I was struck at how many Americans were presenting and felt the whole thing was very Hollywood, so not to my taste at all.

I was chatting with the village butcher (one of my fellow Ugly Sisters), the other day and he was saying that sales of mince have shot up since the horsemeat story broke. I haven't had too many ready meals since being back, except for a couple from M&S, (love their Mousakka) and the homemade meals available from the butcher. If anything, I hope this situation will be good for the smaller businesses like the local butcher etc.:)

If1, I share your sentiments about the small local business and hope the recent course of events will give us all a new appreciation for and encourage us to support what we have right on our own doorsteps. I decided it was time I explore what's available to us here in Scarborough and I googled butcher shops in the area. Well, I swear this is no wind-up folks, two names jumped right to the top of the list.....

Last week, I rehearsed every night for the Panto, so I have got lots of telly to catch up on. According to OH, there is some football game on, so he is going down the pub to watch it as we don't have the football channel (or whatever it is called). I am very happy about this as I can pour myself a glass of wine and watch Mr Selfridge and Dancing on the Edge. Is anyone else watching these?

Last night I watched Lewis. That just makes me want to jump on train and head straight to Oxford.:)

Like you, I'm going to be in England in June for 3 weeks. I'm not a big meat eater, but not vegeterian. My hubby and brothers like their meat, and will have BQs with burgers, sausage, etc. I have a wild imagination, and I don't want to eat any meat while I'm there.

Can I get away with saying I'm suddenly vegeterian?

You need to watch the episode of Gavin & Stacey, where Gavin's mum goes veggie, by accident. It won't give you any good pointers, but it should give you a laugh.

Rodney, you are absolutely right - and I am not getting younger ;) I need to cool it a bit and relax

I will never change my desire to return - and I will eventually. It is a big move to plan and I think it is understandable that some cannot make the move when we initially think we can. But eventually - yes.

What I don't understand is why those who eat the meat of animals who are not stunned before killing (trying to be diplomatic here) cannot get all their meat imported. If they don't like that condition of living in the UK, then . . .

Gosh, that is funny

I eat less meat and poultry than I ever did - and I never eat buffalo or any of the "newer" animals that humans have chosen to kill for human consumption. We kill enough already!

Over the years, I have ventured more into vegetarian cooking and have found some delicious recipes and 80% of the time I prefer to cook these because they are so wonderful! I also eat more legumes (lentils, dried peas, etc.) in the form of homemade soups. I struggle with the fact I still eat meat the other 20% of the time, though.

I often wish there were fewer people on this planet so we kill fewer animals and leave them with habitats to live in because we dodn't take up their space in the form of necessary housing.

My sister got very sick from eating one of those horsey Supermarket burgers, she was admitted to hospital, the Doctors say she is doing much better now and in Stable condition.

Now that's the kind of joke I love, I miss the great sense of humour more than most things.

Did anyone check out those guys on You Tube, They got dressed up in a Horse suit and went in Tesco's looking for their Mum... I love that someone has got the guts to do something like that and film it.

Back to the eating animals thing.

I just got back from the barbers and I was talking to an old chap there, he is 89, and he said he served in the US Air Force for 23 years and was a pilot the whole time. At the end he was a test pilot. Anyhow, he said he was shot down over Germany in WW2 and spent 2 years in a POW camp. I asked how was his treatment and his reply was "compared to what?". Now I was thinking that the POW's had it bad because towards the end the Germans had it bad too because of the food shortage. I was on the wrong track because they said their POW camp was surrounded by farmland. They went on to tell me that they ended up raising cats so they could eat them. They were so desperate for food they also ate sparrows among other things. Those Germans must have hated us. (dumb statement)

I think in that situation I'd eat cat too.

Funnily (or maybe not so funny) our cat is acting like a crazed wild animal lately, Dh threatened to eat her and when Dd saw her bouncing about on the roof of the car she yelled "quick get the pot" Poor old kitty.

Darn Right, I loved that series and remember that particular episode, Alison Steadman was great in it but many others were too, Its a real good laugh if you need one.

Talk about a laugh fish, I have found an absolute gem show on TV and I love it, (Mrs Browns Boys) made in Ireland by all Irish actors, the man who dresses up as a woman and plays Mrs Brown got an award a few weeks ago,
every time I see this show Im in stitches, the writers are just as good as any from the 60,s and 70,s  I never miss a show :D
