His income comes from his estates. You can quibble about whether he should have them, but it's not coming out of taxation. As with most businesses, a lot of it goes on wages. If rich people spend money in Britain, it's all fueling the economy. It's when they spend most of it abroad it's a drain. Or worse, set up some off shore system so they don't pay tax on their British income.
http://www.royal.gov.uk/TheRoyalHous...ceofWales.aspx

'The Prince of Wales's life and work are funded predominantly by the Duchy of Cornwall. The Prince of Wales does not receive money from the Civil List, but the Grants-in-Aid paid to The Queen's Household are used, in part, to support His Royal Highness's official activities. "

"His Royal Highness receives the annual net surplus of the Duchy of Cornwall and chooses to use a large proportion of the income to meet the cost of his public and charitable work.

The Prince also uses part of the income to meet the costs of his private life and those of his wife, The Duchess of Cornwall, and his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The Duchy is tax exempt, but The Prince of Wales voluntarily pays income tax (currently at 40 per cent) on his taxable income from it.

He is in effect a trustee, and is not entitled to the proceeds of disposals of assets. The Prince must pass on the estate intact, so that it continues to provide an income from its assets for future Dukes of Cornwall."

I don't resent people like Oprah and Barack Obama. They were "regular folk" too until they worked their way to something better. They put in lots of dedication and determination, lots of late nights, lots of working when other people were taking it easy. And for them it paid off. Obama's money comes from his book sales - and Oprah's obviously is from an entire empire.

The Royal family is a whole other story but I think saying that will upset a few folk :p

ETA: I was trying to figure out why everyone on that page was black and then I realized that you only linked to the black celebrities page for whatever reason. That means no one on that list was born with a silver spoon in his or her mouth.

Re: OVER 50's & 60's Chit-Chat & Daily Catch-Up Thread

If I can remember the reason for just including the black athletes I think it was to show how far a few of them have come.

I would like to point out that nearly all the rich people didn't start out that way. Thinking entertainers, athletes, entrepreneurs, etc.

Incidentally the one person that stands out with an income that's over the top is the President of Georgia. Why he has such a high income I don't know?

There is no posting of the incomes of the Saudis or the other Middle Eastern states for that matter.

This is an off the wall subject for this forum and I probably got interested because when I look at property in the UK there seems to be endless homes that are over the top price wise and I was wondering how these people can afford them? Now I know.

I kind of felt sympathy for Obama because he only makes $400,000 and it is only his book sales that brings his income up. Relatively speaking he is not very wealthy.

Harrison Ford has an annual income of $70 million which is far more than Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt. That surprises me because he hasn't had any new films lately, that I know of anyway. 'peanuts' for some people.

IMHO I think celebrities and sports stars are WAY OVERPAID!!!

I don't so much mind the really talented ones (still too much money though) but the likes of Paris Hilton and the Kardashian's make me see red!!! :sneaky:

The big money should go to the likes of nurses, ambulance people and soldiers...........people who do something really worthwhile and who help others.........

Re: OVER 50's & 60's Chit-Chat & Daily Catch-Up Thread

In a capitalist society, money goes where average people are willing to spend it. If we were all willing to stop going to baseball games or watching celebrities on TV, and instead paid a lot of money to watch nurses at work, they'd get the big bucks.

Capitalism definitely has its flaws.

Rodney can't you get prescription glasses on the NHS? I mean to say. When you look at Angelina Jolie and Oprah-case closed.

Average Actress Wages
Most actresses struggle to find steady work and many support themselves with another source of income, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Most don't work in long-term positions, so accurately tracking the average actress' annual salary is difficult. Instead, the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks the mean hourly wage those who work as actresses earn on each job, which is $16.20 per hour, as of May 2009. Half of all actresses earn between $10.18 and $29.33 per hour, though their earnings vary by their abilities as well as the type of work they perform.

Celebrity Actress Earnings
Although many actresses struggle to find work, those who become stars have little problem making ends meet. Sandra Bullock, the actress with the highest salary in the 2009-2010 shooting season, earned $56 million, according to Forbes. During the same period, Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon earned $32 million and Jennifer Aniston earned $27 million.
