Between two worlds...I have always made the effort to send cards and I put a little note in each one so it does take time, I have almost finished mine I leave the more complicated ones till the end.

An update to all.....having lost the sight in my eye for nearly two months it finally came back on its own a few weeks ago. I was finally diagnosed with a detached cornea. When I had the cataract removed the cornea split into three and that's was caused the blindness but apparently When the specialist made an appointment for a cornea transplant my cornea suddenly stuck itself back together, the specialist said it was very unique...... Perhaps it was fright....

I was just feeling pleased about that when I came down with a awful cold I am almost better but it was nasty.

Hello Rodney have not gone back and read the postings yet but will try and catch up....

I'd have thought a detached cornea might be rather obvious to the sufferer without expert intervention.

Perhaps you meant detached retina?

'Novocastrian...no it wasn't the retina...when they removed the cataract my cornea over a period of a week split. The surgeon said he had only seen it happen a couple of times and then for it to rectify itself was even more unusual but I am very happy. The surgeon said it didn't go back together perfect a couple of creases but my eyesight doesn't seem to be affected by it...

Am I alone in this antiquated Christmas card habit?
Nope!! My wife sends every year, but not all reply, I think it's a sign of the times what with e mail, Facebook, and Twitter,

I think that if people have taken the time to buy the card, stand in the Q at the Post Office, expect a reply, only out of common curtsey!!

Or am I expecting too much ??

hope you are alright and hubby, enjoy Christmas and the good thing with you still being in the States is that all your family are there and as we all know Christmas really is not the same without our family.

Jasper 123 ... Yes I am lucky but it will never be as I wanted it to be I just have to accept things as they are and be grateful. I think back and it was to late when I got on the plane 30 years ago. Perhaps if I had been married to a British person not a US citizen then I may have stood a chance. I really didnt understand the significance of what I was doing. They should give you a quiz before you leave and then tot up the answers and those getting below a certain number should be warned they will not be good transplants. For instance when I went on holiday I was always happy to be back home whether it was Italy Spain really didnt matter I was just content to be back home. I loved being able to get on a bus and loved walking into town. What I didnt realize was that in most places in the US thats not feasible, I should have read up on the country. I just thought that being the US it would be similar to the UK but they are so very different.
I am lucky that I have my health and technology makes it much less lonely to be in a another country. I can talk to my relatives and I can watch as much British TV as I want. So things have improved over the years.

If1...Thankyou I never realized how difficult it can be having difficulites with your eyes. I wish you a Happy Christmas....I went to the British shop and bought quite a few things, Marks and Spencer chocolates and Quality Street but I have put them away trying not to eat before Christmas. Also I had bloodwork tomorrow so I didnt want anything to show up in that.

Wow, I'd never heard of that happening. I had both eyes done for cataracts last year. Sounds nasty and I'm so glad it's turned out OK for you.

I like to send and receive cards in the post, it shows that someone has made a personal effort. Sometimes I enclose typed letters, usually for those in another country, but it depends on the person. There is nothing to show with electronic messages.

My biggest bugbear with cards is where I am now living in a block of flats. My location is seen and known by everyone as they enter the forecourt, but I receive cards from other residents and I don't always know which flat they are in.

I gave up sending snail mail cards a few years ago. Nowadays I send e-cards. I have a subscription to Jacquie Lawson. My mum loves them.

I love sending (and receiving!) cards. Email and text messages are ok but I agree cards have that extra personal touch. I buy cards whenever I see ones I like, sometimes hoarding them for months till the right person and occasion comes along to use the perfect picture or message.

I have just put my Christmas cards in the post and enjoy receiving cards as well - they add to my Christmas decorations. Just watching BBC Breakfast and they are doing a segment from a post office sorting depo and talking about cards. Apparently we here in the UK send (and receive) more cards than any other country - we were described as the greeting card capital of the world

I thought this was touching

Cop buys food for woman stealing eggs - CNN.com Video

Can you believe this ( three days without food) can happen to a human being and in America at that!
