Old fashioned sweet shop
We were down in Marlborough yesterday, hacking our way through the hordes of half-term tourists and found a little treasure tucked away off the main drag.
There's a little sweet shop where everything is in jars, all old favorites like pear drops, fizzy cola bottles, etc. It was brilliant. I finally satisfied my nine-year craving for Cough Candy, half a pound of sweets for a two pounds.

In Westward Ho, Bideford and Barnstaple (N Devon) there is a little sweet shop like this in each place. So I used to treat myself now and then. They even gave you the sweets in the little paper bags that always got stuck to the sweets are a few hours. Cannot wait to share the odd sweet or two with my 3 year old who thinks all sweets come packaged in plastic!
I am sure you enjoyed them.
sugarmomma they do in N Devon!

I liked those cola bottles that would make your mouth water when you ate them.

Re: Old fashioned sweet shop
As a teenager (many years ago ) I used to work in an old fashioned sweet shop in N Devon
Down here, in some places, there is The British Lolly Shop. I finally went into one in Queenstown and spent an absolute fortune reliving my childhood. Was spolit for choice, and refused to look at the price of anything, just chose the ones that I really miss and paid for them. Came out laden down with sherbet lemons, toffee bonbons, army & navy tablets and peanut brittle. Was so sad to leave without the blackcurrant & licquorice and sugared almonds (I used to buy mum 4oz of these every Saturday).

If you're ever in Godalming or Chichester you'll find these little Olde Fashioned Sweete Shoppes on the main streets. OH and I have spent many a Saturday morning reminiscing over the merits of barleysugar twists and aniseed balls, pineapple chunks and liquorice tablets. Trouble is, these shops are now full of today's children!

I used to think these shops were a real find when I first got back but in reality they are everywhere. My hometown has one in Somerset. Some of them are a right rip off (Windsor and Old Bailey spring to mind) some of them are ok. Some of them just dress up a lot of fairly modern sweets on the old jars.
They are a bit hit and miss IMO.
