Default NHI numbers for returning ex pats

My sons who are in their early 20's but born in the UK, have been out of the UK for 14 years and as far as I know do not have NHI numbers. Can anybody tell me how the system works for finding out is they have them, how to get them, and how they are assigned?

Once you register with a GP surgery, they'll sort it out for you.

There are two different numbers your sons will need: NI number (National Insurance Number). This number is needed for employment (and paying tax, NI contributions, benefits). The second number is the NHS number (National Health Service number), needed to access health services.

1. To get the NI numbers just phone them. From overseas: +44 191 203 7010 If you wait until you're in the UK: 0845 915 7006

2. To get the NHS number: Once you are in the UK, visit a GP surgery in your area and register there. They will set up the NHS numbers. If you have problems finding a GP surgery, contact the Primary Care Trust (look them up in your local phone book - each area has its own). They will then link you up with a GP.
