# shares my 3 just as $ shares my 4...if you see what I mean, but shift and # comes out as £.

I have my keyboard set as UK extended so that's probably the reason.

I'm not bothered about my new MacBook being "legal". I'll just carry it like I did last time with my new iPad Air. No one has ever stopped me over my hand luggage. Just wanted to upgrade here as its so less expensive than in the UK.
I leave 22nd from Dallas via Chicago to Dublin although Belfast is my final destination. The reason being I can travel on AA points first class all the way with three suitcases. There is no first class to Belfast. Great brother...picking me up.
This time I have leased a home for two years. Hope third time is a charm.

How can you double shift? Shift and 3/# comes out as #.

You could use Alt codes (there are hundreds). Hold down the Alt key, then use the number pad to the right of the keyboard (does not work with the row of number keys across the top, laptops have a "shadow number pad" on, IIRC, the keys UIO, JKL, and NM: ).

The £ is 156, é is 130, 1/2 (one symbol) is 171, 1/4 is 172, and € is 0128.

Remember that you have to hold the Alt key down while typing all the digits of the Alt code.

Do you have a keyboard icon alongside those for speakers, internet, battery etc? Right clicking gives a choice of language and the UK one turns the 3/# into 3/£.

Mine is permanently set to UK, but if you don't want to make the change permanent a couple of clicks to change and then a couple to change back is easier than looking up and then using 4 digit alt codes. Unless one can remember them of course.

I don't have a problem, I'm just puzzled how you can do shift and # when # needs the shift anyway.

There are different keyboard mappings buried somewhere in the operating system options. You can select the UK option and it will swap £ for #, and swap the positions of the : and @ symbols. Other countries have other different mappings; I understand that the French keyboard looks totally different from the patterns of letters and symbols used in the UK and US.

So are laptops cheaper in the UK or Canada?

Macs were cheaper in Alberta than the UK, but Alberta has low sales tax.

Not sure if cheaper, but we have a nice large Costco voucher and have to buy something in Canada as it is not valid in UK, hence what to buy that I can bring back in my hand luggage
