Since retiring, several times we have arrived in the UK and left several months later, but have spent a lot of time in Europe so the number days in the UK is much less than what may appear in the pattern of ATM activity.

You may be also correct about your Isle of Man bank not being required to keep track.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there is a proposal to add scanning of the passports of outbound travellers.

I wonder how that will work for those of us (me and Bob :) ) who enter on our UK passport and leave on our US passport. Could get tricky.

I spent several months in the UK a couple of years ago and my bank didn't make me do this. And I have a UK as opposed to offshore bank.

Not really. You have to show your US passport to the airline when flying to the US but then you show the passport you entered on - presumably your UK passport - to immigration officials on departure.

I meant tricky for me. Does the UK care if you are a UK citizen entering on a UK passport and leaving on a US passport? I was once quizzed by UKBA when entering the UK on my US passport while on business and the officer noticed that the company I worked for had no presence in the town I was staying in, and I had to explain that I was staying with my father and driving 20 miles to and from work the week I was going to be there. Entering on my UK passport is just so much easier and I don't believe I am doing anything wrong - but am I?

As a side note, when Boris Johnson, a US citizen by birth (born in NY), tried to travel to Mexico via the US with his family in 2006 he was not allowed to board the aircraft as he didn't have a valid US passport. (His family left without him and he had to travel to Mexico on a route that did not go via the USA.

Just found a company called FrontierMedex travel medical insurance and evacuation for $200 year for my age group.
http://www.frontiermedex.com/

Does any body have any experience with this company. The insurance seems to cover for many trips during a year.

I've not used them or know of anyone who has.

I did a little search based on one of your earlier posts and found this link on who is eligible for NHS treatment. However, this was not listed on the NHS website so I'm not sure about it.

Persons who live abroad, but receive a UK state pension, and who have lived in the UK for at least ten years in the past

Re: Need medical coverage when I return

Thanks durham_lad,
Very helpful, I still have my old NHS card from when I left but it is numbers and letters apparently they changed the number scheme some time back.
I am returning in 2 weeks for an exploratory visit for 3 weeks hoping I can figure out the system.
I will have to return before next April as my UK passport needs to be renewed and I prefer to renew it in the UK ( I did it last time) as the passport shows it as being renewed at UKPA.

The next problem is the ramifications of buying a car in UK.

Have you considered leasing a car? There seem to be plenty of companies offering long term leases beginning at 4 months. We continue to debate the buy or lease option and haven't decided yet which way to go on that decision.

Re: Need medical coverage when I return

Do you have any info for short term leasing, l have been renting a car from Enterprise as there rate were approx £14 a day and they picked me up and dropped me off. I never thought about leasing.
Last year my father was diagnosed with dementia and could not drive anymore. I took over his car and got a reasonable insurance through Tesco AA but had to sell before l left as my father does not know he has dementia and tried to drive the car. I could not leave the car behind as l would have to leave the keys with my mother. She is incomplete denial he has a problem and would probably give him the keys just for peace and quite.
So if you have info on short term leasing were I can return the car when I have to return.

Thanks Bob

Re: Need medical coverage when I return

I also use Enterprise to rent cars in the UK for short term, and their website says to contact them for long term leases. I haven't enquired yet but I Googled the question a few days and saw other firms that would be worth contacting. Sorry, but I don't have any hard numbers.

If you Google "short term car lease UK" a number of companies crop up with estimates of monthly rates, for example:

My NHS numbers have not changed - they are still letters and numbers. I have not heard of them changing existing numbers.
I believe they have "overlaid" the old numbers with the new system. Certainly I quoted mine when I was briefly in hospital in the UK a year or so ago, and nobody batted an eyelid.

Mine changed when I returned in 2006. I quoted my old (letters and numbers) "number" at the GP office and they seemed a bit puzzled at first but they were able to locate my old records using it. Then I was sent a card with my new number (all numbers).
