Moving to Farnborough area from Perth (Australia)
Hi everyone!
My family and I (husband & 2 boys aged 2 & 4 months) are transferring from Perth to the Farnborough area after 10 years in Australia, I am from Ireland and he is from Hertfordshire originally. We have no knowledge of this area and would love some advice from locals. We love the outdoors and would love to live somewhere semi rural but with good infrastructure for the kids (daycare/nursery/things to do) but easily commutable to Farnborough too. I'm a Nurse so somewhere relatively near a hospital would be also good for when I return to work. Any input would be greatly appreciated.. no sure how we are going to get used to the English weather again, we are well and truly soft now haha! TIA Helen

Hampshire, yes. My husbands job is in Farnborough, but as I said we are willing to live elsewhere that is commutable,
Thanks, H

In Ireland myself now and don't really no that area, but I'm sure some people will be able to help. It will also depend on budget and if you will be renting short term, long term, or maybe even buying.

Hi BellsPerth,
Personally I wouldn't live in Farnborough, although I did when I was about 3-5, but now I wouldn't. I still visit occasionally as my sister lives there and I have close friends in Fleet. Fleet or Farnham are good towns close by. Farnham is particularly nice with it's castle in the town centre and Frensham ponds close by.
Good luck moving back

I live near Farnborough and work at Frimley Park Hospital which is an outstanding trust and always looking for good nurses. Good luck with your move.

I don't love Farnborough, it's lacking in soul! We lived in Frimley Green and Camberley for years, nice area. Frimley Park Hospital is a good one. Fleet is also an Ok area.

As a 'born and bred' Aussie/Perthie, I can say that my recent move to the UK/Wirral has been a godsend in terms of the weather! I was soooo over the heat - I've actually come alive here

Having just visited Perth I fell in love with it, so reminds me of Capetown.
I can not even contemplate why you would choose Farnborough over Perth!

Have been back now for just over a year, back from Sydney. Winter last year just didn't happen, I think I saw a dusting of snow for about three days late January / early February. Then for most of the year, I couldn't believe how little it rained, guess I just got used to Sydney rainfall! It has been a bit wet these last few weeks though and has been cold for about a week now but it should be back up to about 10c today and next week (this is SE). Given the choice, I think I do prefer the milder Australian style winter, but it has been quite nice to put on boots and hats and scarves.

I lived in Farnborough for many years. I went to school there and know it very well. It has changed a lot in recent years. It is now home to a large number of commuters who work in London. Consequently, there is a very good rail service to London in one direction and Southampton in the other.
There is also a lot more work available in the town than was previously the case. There are new "science parks" in and around Farnborough Airport, which has been developed from being just the site of the Farnborough Airshow into a fully-functioning airport for private aeroplanes.
Shopping is not a strong point - there is a Sainsbury, an Asda and other shops, so you will have no trouble getting all your day-to-day needs, but you may choose to go to Woking, Guildford or Basingstoke for major purchases.
One other thing to be aware of is that in recent years there has been a large influx of Nepalese people (former Gurkha soldiers and their extended families). This has caused a lot of tension in the area.
On the bright side, the neighbouring council (Hart) is regularly awarded the title of "Best Quality of Life in the UK". Fleet (around four miles from Farnborough) is in Hart, and is somewhere you may wish to explore for property.
