yep. Plus all U.K. residents are entitled to medical care (has always been so), and the housing crisis is not as acute in Scotland as it is in London.

Scotland positively welcomes imigrants if you listen to Ms Sturgeon. As long as the aren’t English (jk, I am English married to a Scot)

Exactly this! We're moving back to Scotland next year and are heartened by the Scots' tendency toward inclusivity rather than fear and hostility. My brother and dad have lived in Scotland for many years and I've spent months there and have loved it! Lovely place; lovely people.

The June 2016 referendum was about the European Union - not the continent of Europe.

That being said, most parts of Scotland are lovely and the Scottish people are normally very welcoming.

Each to their own and individual aspirations. Good luck with your move to Scotland. I'm happy with my lot here in Canada, having moved from the Glagow area going on fourteen years ago now. I do miss some aspects of life in Scotland however not enough to induce me sufficiently to move back. As I say, hope your move is all you wish for.

Having recently moved from Vancouver to Edinburgh, I find the cost of living roughly the same, with no real improvement in living standards. Electricity is more expensive here, (most) food is cheaper. But throw in Council Tax (as a renter) and we're worse off for sure - I realise Property Tax is a serious business for property owners.

Is property on the coast of Devon and Cornwall really much cheaper than The Island? Sooke seems pretty affordable for instance. I agree wholeheartedly about the appalling nature of the real estate market in BC - it's a racket, but hopefully the new provincial Government will try to do something about that. In terms of aesthetics, I'm not sure which is worse - condo towers or bland brick boxes here.

A pint of beer is around 4.50 a pint here now - about $7 which is roughly what I was paying in Vancouver.

Agree people can be more genuine here, but not sure they're friendlier.

All in all I miss BC and we're seriously considering a move back - If you enjoy the lifestyle there then it's simply not attainable in the UK.

And watch out for Brexit (if it's going to happen) - at least Canada doesn't have to contend with that clusterf+ck.
Interesting, we are in Edinburgh (I’m Scottish, wife Canadian and ex Vancouver) and thinking about where we might go in a few years time, BC, ON, or NS perhaps! Edinburgh is a great city but you only live once, the mess of Brexit makes Europe a bit more doubtful as an option.

Why would it be doubtful? Even if not in the EU, you are still in Europe and have the rest of Europe on your doorstep. If you look at Canada, you aren't in the EU, you aren't in Europe and the country is mainly focused on itself + your neighbouring country has a mad president. It's just life.

Meant that in say 5 years time I’m not sure what the deal would be to go live in France or Italy, different to now I assume. We can get into Canada. EU may still work, for me there’s just a bit of doubt now as to how. Time will tell.

Even before the EU, people retired in other countries and I don't see any problems. Some things like health agreements might change, but it will still be cheaper than Canada and available in France or wherever.

When in France, you can still pop over to the UK. What I'm trying to say "Even in Canada you won't have any EU benefits".

My friend is American and trying to retire in the EU. Spain she already ruled out because it us too expensive. After brexit a lot will change for British people without a sizeable amount of money.

Just depends where you're from and what you are used to. Spain expensive? Some peoples mortgage in Spain, would be what some Americans are paying monthly on property tax alone, so it's all relative. You also have to consider visas etc. and it would be no different for a German wanting to live in the US. They would say the US is too expensive, just based on health insurance alone.

I also doubt that British people without a sizeable amount of money, would find Canada affordable now.

What has Brexit to do with an American wanting to retire to somewhere in Europe?

All true of course, however some of us may not see Sturgeons Socialist Republic of Scotland as much of a trade off.

I want to say first I am Pro-Brexit. I am going back to the UK this year for good, with my wife and we are both Dual Citizens in our 60s. Re. the vote outcome...it does not need a brain surgeon to work out who voted for what. The ANTI-Brexit crowd are mainly made up of people young to middle aged, who are into social media and that comes with the want to be able to move freely around the EU for socialable and employment opportunities...totally understandable! The PRO-Brexit crowd are mainly older people...this group remembers the days of low crime, neighbourhood spirit, no political correctness nonsense, no stupid EU rules and regs (remember the one about the shape of bananas sold in food stores).

Add another category to the Brexit crowd. Those who believe well established myths.

When can people stop using the word Brexit? It was a stupid word when the whole thing started and it needs to stop. Also can we keep the subject out of threads not about the event/non event. I avoid them for a reason.
