Moving back to the UK from Belgium

Hello :)

I am a British citizen and have been living in Belgium for the past 4 years. I have 2 children with my partner and have a third one on the way. I desperately want to move my family back to the UK, but have no idea how to do this. How do I go about moving back to the UK? How can I find somewhere to live and a job for me and my partner while I am still in Belgium? My partner is Belgian and we are not married. Because I am pregnant I am unsure if anyone would take me on for work so in the worst case I would need to go on benefits until I can get back to work.

I have contacted so many officials and had no response or no-body knows anything, I am getting so frustrated as I just desperately want to return home:(

Any help would be brilliant :)

Thank you, Charlotte

I didn't want your post to go unanswered. Your best approach is for your partner to focus on finding a job in the UK, in an area where you have support from friends or family and ideally in an area where you could eventually get a job.

If he moved first, he could maybe houseshare then look for a house for the family.

Or better still, don't panic but plan your move back over the next 2-3 years.

Good luck

Thank you for the reply. The problem is my partner is the only one that has an income high enough to support us. At the moment I work part time but at the end of this month it's likely my work will get rid of me so they do not have to give me a permanent contract due to me being pregnant. If my partner leaves for the UK by himself then I have no money at all to survive here. I'm not entitled to government funding or sick leave in this country as I have not worked long enough.

Perhaps you should postpone return to a later date ?

I don't care if it is next month or next year....I asked if people knew how to do this. I'm going round in circles on different websites and trying to contact different people but no-one or nothing is giving me the information I need.

Do you have a UK family address your husband can use in any job applications? This can make a difference to job-hunting. Many employers filter out "overseas" applications, even if it is only Belgium.

Sometimes the Devil you know is better than the Devil you don't know. It may be better to stay where you are while your husband submits job applications.

Finding and applying for jobs involves a similar process in the UK to many countries. A key element is figuring out where the jobs are advertised. Maybe if we knew your husband's occupation there may be someone on here who can tell you where to look?

There have been a lot of threads on returning to the UK and obtaining benefits. Using the Search facility may get you information faster than waiting for replies to your post.

You might not pass the Habitual Residency Test to get benefits, although it seems you would get Child Benefit.

Seems to me that the best route is for your partner to find a job. Then the other things may slot into place. Does he have a profession or trade ?
