Hi me and my husband have decided to move back to Scotland and would like some information from people who have already made the jump.

By the time we get back we would have been in Oz for approx 19 months. What I really want to know is how did people find getting a mortgage??
We have kept our bank accounts and credit cards in the UK will this help?

Also we have a 2 year old will we be able to claim Family allowance/ family tax credits and if not how long will we have to wait.Prior to leaving we lived in Scotland all our lifes.

It a headache with all the finance stuff but I really feel that a weight has been lifted now we have decided to move back.

Ha your not kidding! My inlaws have just left after 6 weeks and the goodbyes sealed the deal for us.It was soooo bad and my daughter was crying this time ,I have never felt so bad in all my life.

We haven't told anyone were moving back yet wanted to keep it to ourselfs till everything is finalised but Im so excited.We're moving back to glasgow... pending house prices of course:rofl:

I am moving back to Scotland with my family (two boys aged almost 2 and 3) in under 5 weeks time. (well actually 4 weeks and 5 days, but who's counting). we have been in Oz for almost 4 years, but have kept bank accounts and credit cards open in the UK. This will only really be helpful when it comes to needing a UK bank account or credit card, other than that your credit is a bit shor I'm afraid. But it's not all bad news.

From what I can gather you will need to be back for 6 months before most places will give you a mortgage, although their are exceptions to this (I believe Halifax is pretty flexible with recently returned people). This is of course your hubby is not self employed, as mine is, because this makes things harder! :thumbdown:If you need a mortgage sooner then Standard Life will consider you after a month or so if you have a job but you will need a 35% deposit. The best thing to do it contact a mortgage broker in your local area and let them do the leg work, but be prepared to rent for a little while at least.

With regards to family benefit, you should be eligible straight away as long as the DSS are happy that your move back home is a permenant one. (You may need to show them a lease on a house for example).

Cheers for your reply Mel... to be honest I can't believe the Mortgage problems! I was a bank manager and mortgage arranger prior to moving here and If you still have a credit rating,could prove continuous employment and had a sizeable deposit I would have been able to get you a mortgage no probs....and thats just 1 high street lender!!!

I read somewhere that you couldn't claim family benefit if you where out the country 26 of the last 52 weeks,so it will be intresting to see if this is the case.

We will not be moving till early next year cause were in the process of getting a house built and we need it completed then sold.

Hi ..to be honest the move kind of fell in our Lap...a few men my husband worked with had been for an interview with a large Oz company offering permanent residancy sponsership and a 12k relocation package...prior to this we had only ever mentioned in passing about living in Australia.

We both had good jobs, a nice house ,great standard of living so they were no major reasons for coming except to see if ,for us it would be a better life.... turns out its the same only no family/friends and thats why were off.

Maybe it all came too easy for us,I really feel for those who put years of work into coming only to realise it's not for them.

We moved back to UK after 4 years in Canada and claimed family allowance from day 1.

I thought the same thing until I tried to find one - what a nightmare! I was a mortgage adviser in the UK for a while but my knowledge has been no help to me whatsoever

I hope things get better for you...guess everything changes so fast that my knowledge will be well out of date... still at least I will be in a rented place close to my family.Thanks and let us know how the move goes.
